January housing starts jump 15.7 percent to 2.09 million

The Commerce Department reports a 15.7 percent rise in January housing starts to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 2.09 million, the highest since February 1984, with a 24.5 percent surge in single family home construction to 1.35 million units.
