Rachel McKie kept a daily diary during a month as a page for Senator Strom Thurmond in Washington. She describes protests outside the Supreme Court during the presidential election, meetings with politicians, and her pride at having a desk and work duties in both offices while witnessing Senate actions and Thurmond’s birthday celebration. Her experiences reflect a pupil’s view of a democratic process and historic events in late 2000.
The first-ever Aiken Elite Junior Cheerleading team claimed first place at the national Cheerleader and Dance Championship defeating 21 other teams. Coaches Barbara Kneece Heather Hudson Dean Cavero Jennifer Powell led sixth to ninth graders from Kennedy Aiken middle schools and local high schools. Senior team placed third, with sponsors including Aiken County Farm Supply and Publix supporting both squads.
A fire on Old Bell Road at 6 a.m. damaged 6.10 acres with unknown cause. A green 1997 Ford Taurus was stolen from EMS Enterprises on Columbia Highway in Monetta between 8 p.m. Sunday and 8 a.m. Monday, valued at 87 000, with broken glass at the scene. Van Aikenman was charged with assault after an Outing Club Road brawl Monday at 3 p.m. Tuesday’s winning numbers include Cash 3 and Cash 4 Midday and Evening draws, plus Fantasy 5 and Big Money Bar totals.
Aiken Christian School lists its A Honor Roll for the second quarter naming Tray Batton Philip Hines Bethany Matheny Lauren Maxwell Marshall Olson Patrick Olson David Stevens and Carrie Soule. Ridge Spring Monetta High seniors Julius Bell Angela Duches win Odyssey Pageant top honors at the Ridge Spring Civic Center with several runners up and Miss titles.
Heather Marie Deppe, a Baylor University freshman, earned dean's list honors for fall 2000. To qualify a student must be an undergraduate with at least 3.7 GPA and enrolled in 12 semester hours or more. A total of 2 011 students were named to the dean's list that session.
