Winter birdwatching tale from Aiken South Carolina
A Charleston area reader writes of a hopeful winter for birds in South Carolina. Purple finches and evening grosbeaks are spotted near Aiken and New Ellenton, with pine siskins reported in Raleigh. The tufted titmouse stands out with its crest and cinnamon sides, while nuthatches and kinglets accompany it in pine stands. Water for birds is urged as many nights freeze ponds and birdbaths. The writer notes 17 species visiting the yard and teases a future column about the red bellied woodpecker.
