The Aiken Standard will observe a holiday Thursday Dec 25 so all employees may be with their families. This is the only holiday the paper misses. The newspaper will publish the afternoon of Christmas Eve and Friday afternoon the day after Christmas.
Dr. Lamont DeLoach of Calhoun Falls was shot in the stomach by an accidental discharge while deer hunting at the Savannah River Plant reservation. He was taken to Aiken County Hospital and admitted for surgery with a single pellet entry and satisfactory condition. He is visiting his parents in Aiken and is brother of Dr. James F. DeLoach.
President Nixon announced the dismissal of Robert M. Morgenthau from his post as U S attorney for the Southern District of New York. He will be replaced by Whitney North Seymour, with Morgenthau given the option to resign or be informed by letter of his replacement.
The Savannah River Laboratory TIS division translates journals in physics chemistry biology and computer science to help researchers access foreign language material. Staff like W O'Rear and Myra S Feldman translate single paragraphs or entire articles, reading French Spanish Romanian and more to support nuclear energy research and peacetime product development.
Newark New Jersey Mayor Hugh J Addonizio was indicted by a federal grand jury on corruption charges with details undisclosed. U S Attorney Frederick B Lacey signaled a news conference as more indictments were anticipated following a prior $20 million gambling ring case against Simone DeCavalcante and 54 associates.
Alfie Leone, 23, a Vietnam veteran who lost both legs, stood on new artificial limbs as Chester County Judge John M. Kurtz Jr. naturalized him at Valley Forge General Hospital in Phoenixville. Perspiration streamed down his face as the judge offered a chair during the ceremony.
University of Florida students launch a center to help peers curb drug use by talking with others who have beaten the habit. Dr. Stephen O Connell donates 55 dollars of his own money to back the program as president.
Airline pilots from around the world met in London behind closed doors to discuss methods to overcome hijack threats. The International Federation of Airline Pilots threatened a worldwide strike if the UN General Assembly fails to address hijacking effectively. Debated ideas include weapon screening for passengers and an impene trable bulkhead between cockpit and cabin.
About 1.5 million government employees paralyzed Rome with a 24 hour walkout. Trains halted, communications disrupted, and most elementary schools closed. Urban transit workers and hospital anesthetists also joined the action.
Saigon reports show South Vietnamese dead surpassing American losses for 30 straight weeks, with 11,450 Vietnamese and 4,907 Americans killed in action over seven months. A 500 man VN battalion in the Mekong Delta suffered heavy casualties after a surprise encounter, while Viet Cong rockets struck Saigon wounding civilians and damaging homes. American Marines and helicopter losses add to the day’s toll, with two choppers shot down and several wounded.
The Salvation Army aims for a 5000 Christmas budget but has only about 3000 donated with a week left. Captain Thomas Cundiff notes kettles and mail requests fund Christmas needs including groceries for 250 families and two toys per child. Local groups and residents donate, while Lions Club and Rotary Club vie for the kettles bell ringing trophy.
The Aiken High School Christmas Band Concert titled The Sound of Music Christmas Concert will now start at 5 p.m. Thursday in the Aiken Junior High School auditorium. The change avoids a scheduling conflict with three Aiken Junior High basketball games set for the evening.
The Aiken Jaycees Christmas Shopping Tour fund exceeds last year and targets 2250 to enable 150 underprivileged children to go on the tour. Tour chair Lee Downs notes donations must arrive by Friday 6 p.m. to count. August contributions bring the total to 1654.91 with several local groups and individuals contributing.
