Aiken Institute Leaders Shape Noted South Carolina School System
Aiken's public schools gain stature under Prof Louis A Hagood in his first year as superintendent of the Aiken Institute. The high school enrollment reaches 705, with 27 percent growth since 1916-17 and a graduating class of 50. The Aiken Preparatory School for Boys and Fermata for Girls trace their pride to 1916 patronage by notable figures. The Institute earned membership in the Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools, signaling standards across eleven states. The district emphasizes new courses, equipment, and library facilities to sustain accreditation. The Preparatory School serves boarding and day pupils from multiple states, with a focus on scholarship, physical development, and organized sports. The Aiken Drag Hunt, annual Sports Day, and various cups highlight student life. Head Master F A M Tabor leads, with a board of directors including Hitchcock, von Stade, Byers, Mead, Mller, and Knox.
