Aiken Centennial Parade and Best Friend Arrival in City

Aiken marks its 100th birthday with a three day program led by a Centennial costume parade and the arrival of the Best Friend. Events include a 9:30 band concert, a 11:00 arrival, a historic pageant, and a county fair with tilting, greased pole, greasy pig race, and more. Visitors tour decorated shops as they step back to 1835.

Dogs Win Big At Local Pet Show In Hitchcock Woods

Puck owned by Mrs George Kent won first in First Class Dogs in Costumes at the S P C A event held Sunday at Tea Cottage in Hitchcock Woods. Kitty owned by Capt Ivanenko took first in Obedience, with Dog and Pal among top entries in subsequent classes.

Aiken Centennial Opens with Airport Dedication Parade

The dedication of Aiken Municipal Airport kicked off the centennial celebration with a 2:30 PM ceremony. Army Pursuit planes from Langley Field and paracade jumps by Tommy Gibbons highlighted an afternoon of air maneuvers.

South Carolina lawmakers will attend the Aiken Centennial celebration. The senate and house will adopt a joint resolution accepting an invitation from the Aiken County delegation for a luncheon Friday connected with the jubilee.

The Centennial Commission appointed by the mayor and city council selects Frank P. Henderson as general chairman with Mrs. R. H. Wilds as vice-chairman and Ernest L. Allen as secretary and treasurer. Other members include Mayor W. H. Weatherford and local figures G. Macculloch Miller F. Ella Croft Averell Clark and others connected to the winter cottage colony.

Aiken Measure Goes to Senate

The Aiken County supply bill for the current year was read in the house and sent to the senate with amendments. The bill leaves the tax levy to a majority vote of the Aiken delegation and lists detailed appropriations for sheriff, jail, treasurer, auditor, education, county agents, health, hospital, magistrates, post mortems, and miscellaneous offices.

New Organization for FERA Workers in South Carolina

Sweeping changes reorganize the relief effort with eleven districts to be set up. Aiken will be in District No 3 under auditor J L Welling and disbursing officer George C Hodges with counties Greenwood Saluda Edgefield Aiken and relief total 4505 at headquarters Greenwood.

Asparagus Season Opens in County Shipments Rise

The Monetta Asparagus Growers Association began shipping this week with an initial seven cars, led by BR Gant president. By ten days, shipments may reach twenty cars daily from ten points including Monetta Batesburg Lemplie Gilbert Ridge Johnston Trenton St Matthews Allendale Fairfax. The weather favors growers and 1934 prices are higher than 1933. The Aiken Montmorenci group also started shipping about 500 crates per day from Montmorenci with J M Venning as president.

The Centennial Booklet highlights early life in Aiken and Aiken County with articles and a Main Street pen sketch on the cover. Three thousand copies were printed and are on sale at city newsstands for twenty cents each.
