The Coast Guard maintains over 42 000 navigation aids including buoys lighthouses beacons and fog signals. In New York Harbor five buoy tenders from Staten Island cover 876 buoys with Arbutus at Long Island Sound replacing 160. Crews perform major overhauls in shops while on station work is released for temporary repairs.
