Dudley Young will end 43 years with the Ada fire department effective July 1, the longest tenure in the unit's history. He joined on September 6, 1921, and says he plans to retire from strenuous work, noting reflexes matter most in emergencies and he enjoyed four decades of service.
Brantley, a Pontotoc County dairyman two miles west of Latta, topped 200 producers in a year long contest sponsored by Gilt Edge Dairy Products. He receives a $100 cash award and a prize plaque, chosen for general excellence across cleanliness bacteria count milk solids and waste. Green Hill Farm runs near 37,000 pounds monthly with 4.5 percent butterfat in summer. Brantley employs labor saving devices and is a registered Jersey breeder and Central Oklahoma Milk Producers Association member.
Richard Bailey of Allen 4-H was elected District 4-H club vice president at the 43rd Annual State 4 H Club Round-Up in Stillwater. Donald Reed and Harris Zackery of Stonewall 4-H presented the state champion automotive team demonstration as Pontotoc County 4-H clubs earned one first, one second, two thirds, and one sixth in state competition.
Vanoss High School students and faculty are constructing a 36 by 102 foot all steel vocational agriculture building this fall without state or federal money. Led by teachers C L Stone and C T Holland, volunteers cleared land, laid forms, and prepared the concrete floors. The structure will house a shop, classrooms, and an office with insulation, central heating, and skylights. Cost is about 10 000 dollars, with wiring and interior work by the team.
Weather readings show 1964 near 1963 in total rainfall for Ada area with May delivering 4.92 inches by Saturday morning and a 24 hour 1.76 inch record. Vanoss High School’s 1964 senior class returned from a funded Washington D C trip. They traveled from Pauls Valley by train May 22, visiting Chicago Grand Central Station and Washington landmarks including the Capitol, Arlington Cemetery and the Lincoln and Jefferson memorials. They toured the Supreme Court building, Library of Congress, Smithsonian and the White House area, with a Potomac River cruise to cap the journey.
The first annual All Indian slow pitch softball tournament for men will be held at Wheeler Park in Oklahoma City on June 21. Sponsored by the Oklahoma City Softball Association with 180 teams, the event will run in one afternoon and entries are limited to the first eight teams. Tear trophies will be awarded to the winner and runner up.
