Pollution Controversy Over Hale Lake Wanes
Oil pollution from a nearby drilling operation polluted the Hale lake southwest of Stonewall and killed all fish. The Corps of Engineers and the Corporation Commission face slow action and limited staff while locals, including the Hale family, try filtration and cleanup efforts. A field agent reports most oil burned or removed and tests show no danger to cattle.

County Attorney Clarifies Immediate Pollution Charge Rule
County Attorney Gordon Melson rejected a reporter’s claim that a 1963 statute lets local rangers file criminal pollution charges if not cleaned up immediately. He cited the attorney general ruling requiring a written report to the Corporation Commission, followed by investigation and a reasonable time for correction before any charges. Bever criticizes SB 1592 as too restrictive, urging gun owners to pressure senators.
