Oklahoma voters rejected a one cent sales tax and two bond issues in a special election. Ada area turnout helped push down the sales tax by margins across all precincts, while highway and institutional bonds also failed in close counts.
Rita Gail Harp was crowned Miss Ada 1965 at East Central College in Ada Oklahoma with Carolyn Carter Miss America 1964 and Vonda Kay Van Dyke present. June Roberts and Donna Hoffman were runners up with Donna Winfrey fourth finalist. Harp also won Miss Congeniality. Miss America praised Ada's event as well.
Judge John Boyce McKeel schedules a Wednesday 10 a.m. motion and de murrer docket in a non jury session. Cases include Bryan O Neal vs Bessie Graham et al special appearance and motion to quash summons and the Warmacks vs McCarty motion to confirm sale.
President Johnson faces uncertain congressional approval for his farm recommendations. Agriculture Secretary Freeman says farm groups show strong apathy and backers must mobilize broad support with real urgency. A cotton program addition is debated, but no plan satisfies cost and passability. Sen McGovern and Freeman discuss expanding the omnibus measure beyond wheat feed grains rice wool and possibly sugar and a retirement plan.
Allen 4-H members held a bicycle safety school at the grade school led by Richard Bailey. High School safety committee instructed students on bike handling lighting and other rider safety basics. Reflector tape was added to each bike for members who joined the Bicycle Safety League after signing a safety certificate.
Roy White of Oakman travels the country with his wife in a truck and camper. His first letter from Fort Pickens Alabama recounts stops at Beavers Bend State Park in Oklahoma and Black Lake Louisiana with low camping fees, then a night in a trailer court and a mosquito filled stay near Fontainbleau State Park.
American Farm Bureau Federation President Charles B. Shuman accuses the Johnson administration of callousness toward farming issues. He says farm prices have fallen to a 25 year low, surplus grain policy and labor shortages hurting farmers, and that farmers feel the White House and secretaries Freeman and Wirtz ignore agricultural needs.
