Man abandons three kittens after running over one in Battle Creek
In Battle Creek at 10 37 am on Wednesday July 25 a white male in a tank top and camo hat dropped off three kittens at the Humane Society of South Central Michigan then fled. He ran over one kitten killing it instantly and left the other two aged about 14 weeks with severe abdominal hernias. Humane Society staff found the dead kitten and the two survivors Halo and Angel are today under care with uncertain prognosis. Abandonment is a misdemeanor with a 500 dollar fine per incident.

Man pulls gun on wife in Pennfield Township
On August 3 at 6 p.m. Calhoun County deputies responded to a Pennfield Twp residence after the wife reported her 60 year old husband pointed a firearm at her during a domestic dispute. An arrest warrant followed, a search warrant was executed, the suspect was found and jailed for assault with a dangerous weapon and possession of a firearm during a felony.

Animal Hoarder May Face Felony Charges in Athens Township
Deputies with the Calhoun County Sheriff executed a search warrant in Athens Township on July 31 and seized 35 cats eight dogs and one bird from a residence in squalid condition. With Animal Control and Adult Protective Services assisting all animals were transported to the county shelter. Potential felony animal cruelty charges over 10 animals may be pursued once the investigation concludes.

Reeves leads speedboat collision at Duck Lake injuring dog
On August five at about 440 PM a speedboat operated by Nicholas Jay Benson 31 of Eaton Rapids struck a paddleboat carrying Ashlee Elizabeth Johnson 28 of Troy Midwoman and Jana Leigh Johnson 22 of Battle Creek and their dog at Duck Lake public access Clarence Twp. The dog suffered a life threatening head injury and was taken to an area veterinarian while the boat operator was cited for reckless operation and lack of valid registration.

Drunk driver cited after rollover in Pennfield Township
Deputy investigators from Calhoun County Sheriff responded to a personal injury rollover on N Drive North near McAllister Road in Pennfield Two. The 25 year old Albion man was trapped then freed by passersby and transported to Bronson Hospital Battle Creek. Charges pursued for driving with a suspended license and operating under the influence. A 21 year old Marshall woman, passenger, sustained minor injuries and refused treatment and was cited for possession of open intoxicants in a motor vehicle.
