Marshall Light Guard and First Michigan Volunteer Infantry Forming for War
Local Marshall history notes in 1861 Michigan response to Lincoln's call for 75 000 militiamen. The Marshall Light Guard became Company I of the First Michigan Infantry. Funds were raised privately to equip troops as state finances were depleted. The unit trained at Marshall before marching to Detroit for deployment under Colonel Orlando Willcox amid community support and rapid drilling led by Kinsman Hunton.
