Many Counties Striving to Eliminate Ruts in Concrete Macadam Roads
Concrete macadam roads are being built across the country to resist rutting under heavy use. Wayne County Michigan reports nearly eight miles of two course concrete macadam roadways after two seasons. The bottom layer uses limestone concrete with a one two and a half and five mix. The top layer is a one two and three mix with crushed cobbles. Road depth is six and a half inches and width ranges from fifteen to nineteen feet.

Plan to Drag and Maintain Roads by Poll Tax Payors
A proposed plan assigns each poll tax payer a road section not exceeding a half mile. In spring and after rains, each person drags and smooths his section with a split log drag, filling ruts and crowning surfaces to shed water. The aim is quick, minimal disruption to farm work and nationwide capability to maintain all roads in a few hours.
Need for Better Wagon Roads Highlighted by Rail Freight Link
The article argues that railroad expansion does not reduce road work but increases it. It notes that poor U S roads hinder transport, with teams moving only 800 to 900 pounds per trip, while in France a draft horse can haul 3 306 pounds for 18 miles daily.
