Will Form Big Drainage District In Mason Valley

A drainage district of about 8000 acres will be formed in Mason Valley with a meeting set for Thursday August 19 in Yerington. The move, under the Drainage Act of 1913, avoids interference with the Nevada Irrigation Act. C A Hyatt, Carlo Scatena, Chas McLeod and Edward Knemeyer were appointed to circulate a petition for county approval. The petition requires signatures from landowners owning one third of the land or one half of the land owned by one third. It is believed the petition has the required majority. The district would extend about a quarter mile south of the creamery and about three miles north of Yerington, spanning east and west from the mountains to the river. County Commissioners will consider the proposal at the September 6 meeting, with up to 30 days for decision and three supervisors to determine benefits and assess damages if benefits exceed costs. Land not benefited will not be assessed. Engineer G W Malone estimated the main drain at about eight feet deep and 10 to 12 miles long. Organization was discussed by Joe Wilow Jr County Agent and F W Simpson of the Irrigation District, who support drainage but prefer wider work under the drainage law. The project has strong local backing from the Creamery community and the Firm Bureau, recognizing drainage as essential for irrigation and drainage water use.
