Persian Gulf Command hard at work delivering for Russia
Maj. Gen. Connolly reports that since December 1942 the Persian Gulf Command moved over 4.38 million tons of Lend Lease supplies to the Soviet Union. Ports at Khorramshahr and Bandar Shahpur grew from 95 000 to 265 000 tons monthly capacity by October 1944 as longshoremen and railway troops built a vast supply chain. The road from Khorramshahr to Kasvin saw 97 million miles of truck driving yielding 260 million ton miles, with Desert base work and desert roads converted to support full truck traffic. Planes and trucks assembled in Iran for the Red Army included 35 703 tons of planes and 143 000 vehicles, moving through Teheran to Tabriz and into the Caucasus, under harsh conditions and intense heat.
