Disease in Cuba Tied to Food Shortages and Fevers
Washington reports weekly Marine Hospital findings from Havana. For the week ending Sept 9 there were 826 deaths with 15 from yellow fever, 29 from enteric and pernicious fevers, 84 from dysentery, and 635 from enteritis. The health official argues yellow fever deaths are misclassified under enteritis and enteric fever, noting few yellow fever cases in military hospitals, while city deaths from yellow fever persist. He cites hunger and lack of nutritious foods as the root cause of high enteric and dysentery deaths and warns of laws restricting food imports unless broader access is allowed.
