Successful Masquerade at Cliff House Ballroom
The Cliff House hosted a successful masquerade on Wednesday evening. About two hundred attendees, fifty masked couples, and a grand march were coordinated by Chester H. Pope. Prizes went to Mephistopheles in red, Turkish maiden, and ballet girl costumes amid a rainbow of electric lights and lively scenes.

James H Cordes Dies at 14 In Winthrop Home of Heart Failure
Captain James H. Cordes former fisherman and boat captain died Monday at 3 15 p m after a three week illness of heart failure He was born in Truro Cape Cod August 22 1825 and later settled in Winthrop with his daughter He was a 40 year Mason and had a summer home with his nephew and niece at 224 Bowdoin street Funeral services were held at his summer home in Truro with Rev Charles Tilton officiating and interment followed beside his wife in Truro He leaves a brother a sister a daughter and grandchildren.

Winthrop Improvement Association Postpones Meeting
The Winthrop Improvement and Historical Association postpones the Monday evening meeting set for September 6 due to a holiday. It will meet instead at the Deane Winthrop House on Monday evening September 15. An afternoon sewing gathering and a 6 30 supper for the men precede the 8 o'clock business meeting. Joseph I. Newton will preside.

Mrs Alita Avis Claffin Banta Dies After Weeklong Illness
The widow of Harry D. Banta of 566 Shirley Street died after a brief illness. A son was born Tuesday morning and died a few hours later from heart failure. Mrs. Banta, 31, taught at Lasell Seminary and Auburndale, lived in Omaha ten years, and married in Jamaica Plain in 1900. She was a grand niece of ex Governor Claflin and leaves no nieces. Funeral was at her home with the Harvard Quartet of Boston performing. Interment at Milford.

Wanderer Sloops Sinks Off Marblehead Harbor Collision
The Winthrop sloop Wanderer owned by S. G. Bowen sank at Marblehead harbor entrance after a collision with the revenue cutter Seminole as both boats prepared for sender races. Mr and Mrs Bowen their 12 year old son Richard and O W Potter of Roxbury were rescued as the yacht vanished.

On Labor Day the Fort Banks baseball team and band travel to the Concord County Fair. Special cars depart from Centre at 11 56, Beach 12 00, Ocean Spray 12 04, Highlands 12 05 and Battery 12 08 with one car reserved for the band and team.
