At Monday's selectmen meeting just before town meeting Chief McNeil was offered a resignation opportunity or removal. He refused to resign and stated he had served the town for 14 years performing his duties.
Ernest R Buffington chosen as chief to replace McNeil with effect April 6. He has long ties to Roxbury real estate, amateur theater, and local clubs. a Winthrop resident for years, he held cadet and military roles and led civic efforts. Town Meeting in high school hall lasted three hours with harmonious debate on budgets and repairs.
A major bicycle race meet is planned for April 19 at Revere. In the main event Hugh McLean will ride 20 miles against an opponent yet to be chosen. Negotiations are under way for Frank Kramer to challenge McLean. Also featured is Eddie Root, three time New champion, in paced ranks alongside Elmer Collins in pursuit events.
