Roses and Flags Honor A. M. Capen at Local Post Office

A bouquet of 70 roses was placed on Asa M. Capen’s post office desk last Saturday as flags lined one side and the other in tribute. Postmaster David Belcher and assistants Frank Colby and Richard Cox arranged the display. Capen, aged 70, born in Dorchester, has wartime service, belongs to Joe Hooker Post 23 G A R, and serves as chaplain of the Winthrop War Veterans association. He joined the Boston postal service in 1872 and later moved to East Boston before settling in Winthrop 14 years ago. He lives with his son.

Ladies Aid Supper at First Baptist Draws 200 Plus

The Ladies' Aid of First Baptist hosted supper for over 200 in the vestry. President Ida M. Whitman led planning with helpers including Annie B. Moody and M. O. Hill. Proceeds funded church debt relief after a pastor's address and musical selections.

A three member commission hears 39 cities and towns of the Metropolitan Park district on apportioning taxes for the next five years. The 1905 total valuation was 2.338 billion dollars. Boston seeks a revised basis while Brookline favors current valuation.

Death of Dr Willis B McMichael details

Dr Willis B McMichael of East Boston died yesterday in Newcastle Maine after heart trouble. He visited his ill mother and had practiced medicine since 1880 after study at Chapman grammar school Boston Latin School Boston University and Harvard Medical School. Survived by wife Florence and son Earl. Funeral in Newcastle Maine with ties to East Boston and Winthrop.

Martin J OBrien dies after 23 years at Boston Globe

Martin J OBrien longtime Globe employee died at his Coral Avenue home after a brief pneumonia illness. He leaves a wife Annie Reardon two sons George and Martin Jr a daughter Anna and two sisters Delia and Mary. The funeral was at 9 am from his home with high mass at 10 am in St John the Evangelist Winthrop and interment at St Marys Dorchester. Born in Galway in 1870 he came to America penniless as a child and built a steadfast life in Boston.

New Federal Law Sets Safety Equipment for Motor Boats

A July 9 enforcement date begins a new act requiring motor boats to display specified lights from sunset to sunrise, carry a whistle, foghorn, bell, and life preservers or buoyant cushions for all aboard. Violators face a $100 fine and boat seizure, with ignorance no excuse. Boats 26 to 65 feet must also have a bell at least eight inches wide.

Boston Man Faces Assault and Property Damage Charges

John Hanrahan of 29 Perkins Street was in municipal court charged with assault and destruction of property after throwing a shoe and two bricks at Robert A. Trenholm of 324 Atlantic Avenue Boston. Three panes of glass were broken and Trenholm testified to the incident. Hanrahan was fined 25 dollars for glass destruction and 10 dollars for the assault.
