Pupils in Dramatics of Mabel J Golden Give Fine Entertainment
Despite a severe storm a large Ells Hall audience enjoyed nearly three hours of dramatic performances by Miss Mabel J Golden's pupils. The program included solos, group dances, readings, and a Fairy Play with names of students and pieces such as The Little Sunshine Circle, America for Me, Mammy's Lullabye, and The Changeling.

A Regiment of Two, a two act farce, played before 400 at the Winthrop Yacht Club hall last Friday night to benefit the club. Dancing followed until midnight as committee members led by Herbert F Ward hosted the event.

Land About Centre Station a Bog Was Once a Frog Pond
Excavations near Winthrop Center station reveal historical land features. A woodside Somerset corner shows old topsoil and a high hill slope once at the streets junction, with 1885 sand banking linked to George F. Tewksbury. South of the stores a deep swamp filled by 1890 yielded frogs captured for hotels, while the Jefferson Putnam site uncovers four feet of muck and preserved pine stumps. Nearby an old Indian burial ground near the Methodist site ties to Harvard transfers of local natives.

Winthrop Fire Dept Goes Motorized With New Ladder
The Winthrop fire department will become entirely motorized soon. The Maxim combination ladder and chemical is nearly finished at Middleboro and should be in operation at the Shirley street house before July 1 after a thorough test. Four permanent men at the station are training on motor apparatus and becoming capable drivers. In 1916 horse care cost 1225.50, with 1034.20 for feed and 181.80 for shoeing. The move to motor vehicles is expected to reduce this expense and improve efficiency. Last year the department spent 17541, returning 1300 to town treasury, while 1915 expenses exceeded the appropriation by a few hundred dollars. Disbursements to permanent and call firemen for the past two calendar years are listed.
