The selective draft registration opened at 7 am in Winthrop and ran to 9 pm across four precincts. Thousands queued early as 991 men were officially counted, with Precinct 1 housing 280, Precinct 2 244, Precinct 3 292, and Precinct 4 175. No incidents were reported.
The Point Shirley Yacht Club held its season opener with market whist at the clubhouse on Wednesday night. Twenty tables competed. Ex-Commodore Jones won first prize, followed by Kenneth Godfrey, Mrs. H. E. Gustin, Mrs. Mary B. Smyth, Mrs. George Welch, and Mrs. A. Little. Commodore Josh Jacobs and Vice Commodore R. W. Doe presented the awards.
Miss Ella M Hazelton of East Boston and Robert E Jenkins of Winthrop married at St Josephs Church East Boston by Rev Charles A Ulrich. Bridesmaid Miss Mae Jenkins best man Herbert Jenkins. Reception at 1056 Bennington Street East Boston. They plan a summer home in Contoocook New Hampshire and may reside in Allston after travel to Atlantic City. Mrs Jenkins active in Winthrop K of C minstrel shows and Elks. starred in Flo's Millions. Mr Jenkins salesmen and Winthrop K of C member.
Mrs Marion J widow of Calvin Page Low died at her home in Winthrop Highlands Thursday of last week. Former Chelsea resident. Husband was a prominent business man and artist. Funeral services were held Sunday and were private due to family illness.
Miss Lucille Pennington and Richard B. Lewis Jr. wed at the Methodist church in a May evening ceremony. Rev. Charles Tilton officiated with Rev. Charles Otto assisting. The bride wore white tulle and silver lace. Arline Chandler was maid of honor with pink attire. Bridesmaids wore pale blue organdee lavender and yellow gowns. flower girl Margaret Dunn spread pink rose petals. Best man Halstead H. Lewis and ushers Webster Howard Alfred Gorham John Hurley Wesley Coleman. Reception decor featured pink roses palms ferns. couple to reside in Nashua, New Hampshire.
The bank has received a telegram from Secretary McAdoo requesting subscriptions to the Liberty Loan. The bank offers to handle subscriptions at no charge and invites the public to participate, noting their services are free and the advertisement is legitimate.
Winthrop Liberty Loan Committee met May 31 with nine organizations represented to spur bond sales. A second meeting refined letter distribution and bond purchase plans via the Savings Bank and local druggists. Subscriptions must be in by June 15 as residents are urged to lend to the government rather than donate.
Deputations of craftsmen linked to Faneuil Hall Market and the Boston Elevated Railway were greeted by Worshipful Master George L. H. Stevenson in Winthrop Lodge Tuesday night as associates were to be enrolled. Grand Marshal Edward N. West was invited to confer a degree with old friends in attendance, aided by several Past Masters from multiple lodges.
The June meeting at the Deane Winthrop House was chaired by Vice-President Fred W. Woodcock with two new members elected. Mrs. C C Ely of the Boston Red Cross Metropolitan Chapter spoke on the Red Cross history and work, followed by Kenneth Murdock of the Branch Organization Committee. The gathering adjourned until October.
