Memorial Day Dedication of Town Monument Above All Went Smooth

The Memorial Day dedication of the town’s soldiers and sailors monument, organized by the Winthrop War Veterans Association, proceeded without a hitch. The procession moved from War Veterans Hall through Pauline, Pleasant, Winthrop streets to the library grounds for ceremonies, lunch followed by speeches, and church services ended with a substantial dinner for about 250 guests.

Death of George A. Foxcroft on Winthrop Street

The death of George A. Foxcroft occurred at his Winthrop Street residence late Saturday evening from heart failure after two years of declining health. Family recalled his after dinner cigar and a calm passing during a card game. Undertaker Charles R. Bennison led the obsequies.

Boston advertiser George A. Foxcroft dies after long illness

George A. Foxcroft of Dedham born October 1841 served in the 8th Massachusetts Regiment during the Civil War and re enlisted in the 24th Massachusetts. A Boston advertising pioneer he organized the Boston bureau and originated Star course concerts. He lived in Winthrop, served as town treasurer, and died after leg amputation for blood poisoning with his wife’s care. Funeral at St John’s Episcopal Church and procession escorted by town police and fire department members.

Memorial Day Notes and Veterans Honor Parade

Nearly 1,000 flags were presented to school children by veterans. Wadsworth block was decorated with national colors. The memorial features a soldier in marching order on Milford granite. Winthrop War Veterans mourn three members: Simmons Abbott and Foxcroft. Cemetery upkeep praised. Supt Bennison credited. Social Hall dinner set new records.
