Ranger Camp at Content Led Texas Rangers in Runnels County

The 1874 Ranger Camp near Ranger Peak in Content, Runnels County, guarded settlers against Kiowa and Comanche threats. Capt. W. J. Maltby’s Company E housed in tents, dug a 60 foot well, kept horses on picket, and lived off hunted game and mesquite beans. A famed bear capture occurred during a scouting patrol, witnessed by settler Tolbert Burford. The camp closed in 1876 after Indians were driven from the Western Frontier.
