Undesirable Brush Threatens Rangeland in Soil District
H Gieseche Jr chairman of the Runnels Soil Conservation District reports 127210 acres of rangeland in the district with ten percent or more brush. Brush competes for moisture and uses water to produce forage, with mesquite requiring 2500 pounds of water per pound versus 500 for sidecats grama grass. James Glynn of the Soil Conservation Service notes varied success from aerial spraying basal oiling spraying mechanical and hand methods and urges range reseeding and full growing season rest following brush control. Joe B Wilson and W A Mitchell have added brush control range reseeding and deferment to their conservation plans.
