The Measles Must Go project funded by the Winters Lions Club illustrates community growth through volunteer work. Many individuals dedicated time and talent to benefit the whole area, proving progress comes from involvement and collective action rather than waiting for others to act.
OS Lacy uncorked a long buried anecdote from Graham when he kicked an old bottle from beneath a house. The Vess soft drink, once bottled by Bubble Up Bottling Co. of Graham, was in use until about 1950. The find adds to a daughter's bottle collection and sparks chatter about vintage brands and local memory.
A mass immunization in Winters as 363 children received measles vaccine under the Measles Must Go campaign. Of the group 73 were pre-school and 290 school aged, including 22 from Wingate school. Lions Club led the effort with support from the State Health Department and school staff.
The Runnels Baptist Youth Association will host a Youth Rally for Christ at Robert Lee Baptist Church on Saturday February 8 at 8 p.m. The event features the film Silent Witness and a fellowship session. Attendance has grown from 60 to 192 in January. The Associational Youth Choir will rehearse at 6:30 prior to the rally under Stanley Cobb. The church bus will transport youths ages 13 to 24 from Ballinger’s First Baptist Church, departing at 5:45 p.m.
Runnels County School Food Service Association met at the home of Mrs J B Whitlow in Winters. Dennis Ray Dunnam RN Title I nurse for Ballinger spoke on assisting underprivileged and malnourished children and milk programs, plus help from visiting teacher Evelyn Hale. Refreshments were served to members from Winters Ballinger Rowena and Miles. Next meeting set for Miles on February 28.
Sgt Monty England, son of Mrs Fayrene Allen of Wingate, was assigned January 11 to the 60th Artillery near An Khe, Vietnam, as a motor sergeant. His wife Christa lives in West Germany.
Lt. Governor Ben Barnes predicts defeat for compulsory school consolidation as the Texas Senate and Legislature consider alternatives. He mentions potential financial incentives to encourage voluntary consolidation and adoption of new laws.
The American Cancer Society district meeting in San Angelo outlined district aims for April fundraising. A specific target of 1,000 dollars was pledged for the North Runnels County Unit. Doctors Browne Carsner and French spoke on progress and the ACS Texas research investment surpassing one million dollars.
Lt Governor Ben Barnes of Austin is named chairman of the 1969 Texas Easter Seal Campaign set for March 1 to April 6. Herman W. Baker notes Barnes will lead over 20 000 volunteers in the statewide appeal supporting the Texas Easter Seal Society to aid crippled children and adults.
Winters High School Blizzardettes stand 8-0 with two games left in district play while Merkel sits 6-2 and Hamlin 5-3. They beat Haskell 55 to 27 on Tuesday with Carla Walker scoring 20 and Debra Carroll 17 as Winters builds momentum toward the title.
The Winters sub-office of the Tax Assessor sold 162 sets of 1969 passenger car license plates by Wednesday evening.
Rep. Lynn Nabers, representing Brown, Coleman, Coleman, Conanche and Runnels Counties in the 64th District, is appointed to State Affairs Insurance Criminal Jurisprudence Conservation and Reclamation Commerce and Manufacturing. Speaker Gus Mutscher announced the assignments as Nabers reports receiving over 750 constituent letters on the Governor's Education Report.
Sen David Ratliff submits Senate Bill 114 proposing creation of a Runnels County Hospital District to cover Precincts 2 and 3. The district would form if property owners petition or 50 qualified voters approve, with the commissioners court to call the election.
Winters voters will decide on a regular city election Saturday April 5 1969 for mayor and two aldermen with terms of two years. City Secretary Buford Baldwin reports 91.31 percent of 1968 taxes collected as of February 3. Athletic Director Jerry Gibson proposes a summer recreation program including swimming and events to be supported by the school facilities. Incumbents Wade White Nelan Bahlman and E E Vaughan may seek re election with filing due by March 4 or 30 days before the election.
Joy Awalt was elected Glacier Queen at Winters High School Tuesday February 4 in the auditorium. Senior Awalt was escorted by Charles Mathis, with Miss Becky Mathis and Miss Cindy Davis as runners up and other escorts listed. The Glacier staff sponsored the event.
Mrs Roy Young returns home after a few days visit in the Austin home of her daughter Mr and Mrs Denny Aldridge. She traveled with Mr and Mrs J D Aldridge who also visited in the home of their son Denny Aldridge and family.
Winters High School students in four classes elected one boy and one girl as class favorites. Senior favorites are Wade White Jr. and Cindy Pinkerton, junior favorites Howard Thomas and Janice Pierce, sophomore favorites Terry Loehman and Jill Matthews, and freshman favorites Jimmy Benson and Cheryl Drake. The selections will be featured in the 1968-69 Glacier yearbook.
Winters Riding Club announces practice Sunday February 9 at 2 o clock in the arena. All members and prospective members should bring their horses and participate. A business meeting is planned for Tuesday February 11 at 7 30 p m at the R C Kurtz home north of Winters.
Mrs James Primdahl of Travis Air Force Base California arrived Wednesday night to visit her mother Mrs Ela Thomas and stay at the home of her brother Mr and Mrs R C Thomas.
Winters High School unveils a modern language laboratory with a recording playback console, three tape decks, 24 listening posts, and four independent booths. One teacher can guide studies in eight directions or speeds, while four students record or playback simultaneously. The setup aims to enhance educational advantages for the community’s students.
