Mile Harvest Getting Underway Here
The 1975 mile crop begins harvest with rain and drought concerns eased. Farmers report grain yields from 1800 to 4500 pounds per acre and prices around 4.40. Shippers fear boxcar shortages may bottleneck transport as the high yield hits rail demand.
Efforts to Prevent Abandonment of Abilene and Southern Line
Widespread protests continue over Abilene and Southern Railway Co. request to abandon about 39 miles from Winters to Abilene. Local shippers argue 1974 figures misrepresent traffic, noting far stronger activity in 1973 and 1975. Congressman Omar Burleson urged a public ICC hearing and urged equal, nondiscriminatory consideration with protests due by September 1, 1975.
