Senate Finance Committee rewrites the House Silver Bill detailing invalid pensions for Civil War veterans, widows, and children. The measure sets monthly pensions from six to twelve dollars and caps agent fees at ten dollars. cost estimates run from 30 to 100 million yearly, with first year about 60 million.
Washington June 12 The senate committee on finance reports back the house silver bill with amendments striking out legal tender and bullion redemption provisions and suspending bullion purchase, adding a ten year limit. Several bills pass including public buildings at Benoine Wis Duluth Minn and cattle trade and export inspections. Seventy five pension bills pass as the senate adjourns after secret session.
Senate members introduced bills including one by Sherman to implement the International American conference recommendations by creating the International American bank. Evarts proposes raising first class letter carriers to 1200 dollars and second class to 1050 dollars annually.
The post office department received notice of an arrangement by the Mexican government to place phonographs in all Mexican post offices for public use. Machines will travel through mails at first class rates. The phonographs aid those unable to write and are managed by a company that pays a portion of receipts to the government.

A natural gas leak filled the cellar at 19 Pike Street Allegheny causing a blast that killed Mrs Kipp, about 70, and her granddaughter Lizzie, 6. The fire burned clothing and hair, leaving a horrific scene as witnesses watched rescue attempts fail.

One vein extends three miles and the new range named Allouez is seen as an extension of the Gogebic iron range. Keokuk Iowa June The arrest of Frank Dobbs in superior court ends with his discharge as no relatives of murder victim Bill Cottrell appeared. He is later rearrested on a Hancock county grand larceny charge and moved to Carthage.
The eighteenth annual Minnesota State Fire association session closed after a successful meeting. Representatives from eighty towns and cities across the state attended, signaling broad participation and strong end to the conference.
Nellie Dougherty aged 11 in Hazeltine Pennsylvania was fatally burned by her brother about 10 or 11 who held her over a brush fire while they fished to roast frogs. He delayed extinguishing flames. the girl jumped into a creek to escape. The boy survived serious burns and will recover.
New York report says rider “Snapper” Garrison escaped death when his horse Brother Ban dropped dead in the stretch at Morris Park. Garrison was thrown but escaped serious injury, while the unlucky horse’s death may have saved him from being trampled by the trailing field.
Kingston Ont June 12 An American vessel faced a protest by Col Colton Battery A Kingston to keep excursionists from boarding the St Lawrence until the American flag was lowered The steamer had permission to call at Canadian ports on the St Lawrence for a Thousand Islands excursion Mayor Brennan of Kingston was among the party Anxious stand by the Canadian order of Foresters caused a stir but the owners refused to obey Coltons demand and the band was not allowed aboard.
At Aberdeen South Dakota on June 12 the Democratic state convention chose Col M W Sheafe as chairman, adopted credentials with 260 delegates, and set Maris Taylor of Beadle as Governor candidate. W I Quigley and C Thomas named for Congress. Peter Couchman for Lt Gov. C H Freeman for Secretary of State. A H Wicks for Auditor. H P Harswell for Treasurer. S B Buskirk for Attorney General. Bartlett Tripp endorsed for U S Senate amid clashes over suffrage. Ferrous Fats Minn reported county alliance backing government ownership of railroads and a full ticket.
New York June 12 Interest rises as Baltimore and Ohio stock sale to Edward R Bacon heats up. Rumors say vast deal and cross-ownerships with Northern Pacific, Pacific Mail in Tacoma, and Baltimore terminals in Chicago. Great Northern denies Puget Sound blackout amid Seattle Lake Shore buy. Minnesota Loyal Legion marks fifth anniversary with 200 members and banquet. three new members admitted.
Denver June 12 There is great uneasiness in business circles over the pending strike of all laborers and mechanics in the building trades It is thought that if the present difficulty between the lumber mill owners and their striking employer is not amicably adjusted at once a general strike will be ordered.
Four railroads the Pittsburg Cincinnati and St Louis road the Chicago St Louis and Pittsburg company the Cincinnati and Richmond Railroad and the Jeffersonville Madison and Indianapolis Railroad have formalized a consolidation under the name Pittsburg Cincinnati Chicago and St Louis Railroad. The new capital totals 75 million dollars with 30 million in preferred and 40 million in common stock to be issued.
The president has sent to the senate several nominations including appointments for receivers and postmasters. Names mentioned include Evans, Dobson of Iowa at Buffalo, Oklahoma. Percival of North Dakota at Devils Lake, Minnesota. and Henry Mason as postmaster at Minneota.
