A storm near Mansfield Ohio on June 4 caused a lightning strike on Tracy Avery's powder house east of the city containing two tons of powder. The blast leveled two frame houses nearby, killed a man’s wife and one child, injured another, and sent bricks and debris across the area. About 3,000 people visited the scene. Nearby damage included hundreds of broken windows and widespread destruction.
Reports from Jeffersonville and Evansville describe a heavy storm sweeping Huntingburg and Jasper with widespread rain hail and wind. Early telegrams claimed severe damage and injuries but Evansville dispatches say no serious destruction occurred and only minor harm was reported.
A June 4 storm at Glenwood Iowa toppled the brick smoke stack of the Iowa Imjecile Asylum striking the roof and killing Wesley Emery and William Lane while seriously injuring John Schwalie Fred Wright and David Landon among others. Several other buildings were wrecked as crews from Creston Atlantic and other points aided the scene.
A Monday night storm swept Iowa, Illinois and Wisconsin with high winds and electrical activity. In Medford Wisconsin lightning sparked a blaze destroying twelve buildings, as damage reported from various points across the region.
A washout on the Chicago Burlington and Northern line near May Wisconsin caused a Kansas City and St. Paul freight train to derail. An engine on twenty cars was struck by the washout, killing a brakeman and a fireman. The incident occurred sixty miles north of Prairie du Chien.
A Omaha incident details a ten year old boy Mike Haig who warned train crews when a switch was misaligned at the depot, preventing a crowded passenger train from leaving. No suspects found yet behind the switch sabotage. Meanwhile in Iowa, Loveland is leveled as Boyer River floodwaters wash away buildings after a Monday night storm. no fatalities reported.
A damaged transcript describes the Arcadia cloudburst causing severe local flooding and structural damage. Foundations are undermined and houses show weighty wear, with initial reports underestimating the extent of destruction.

Reports from 19 North Dakota and 27 South Dakota counties to the U S signal office indicate favorable growing conditions over the past week for grain. Rain has been scattered, aiding prospects from fair to good in North Dakota and good in South Dakota. Cutworms cause damage in spots, with some corn fields delayed, and wheat fields occasionally destroyed though rare.
Miss Sarah Elkins eldest daughter of Stephen B. Elkins wed Maj. A. C. Oliphant at her father's residence with Rev H Newton officiating. Ushers included James V. Long Richard Colter Jr Lieuts Griffin and Woodward. Gifts came from President and Mrs Harrison Secretary and Mrs Blaine Secretary and Mrs Windom Andrew Carnegie and Gen Bevel and staff.
New York June 4 Miss Grace Oakes daughter of T F Oakes president of the Northern Pacific railroad and Frederick Brooks son of Francis Brooks a gentleman were married in a ceremony performed by Bishop Potter at the courthouse garden.
The Oslichs of New York wed Miss Theresa Fair daughter of former Senator James O Fair at the bride’s mother’s home in San Francisco. Arch bishop Reardan officiated the Roman Catholic ceremony yielding a quiet, family wedding in the city.
Harry Goodwin and Cora Skinner of Lawrenceburg Indiana ran with Squire Sterling from Elizabethtown Ohio as her father pursued on horseback. They crossed back into Indiana where the license was valid and the squire declared them husband and wife amid a cheering crowd. The father departed without blessing.
Orion June 4. D Webster Stoddard convicted of forgery at Herkimer. He rose from his chair, retired to an ante room, drew a revolver, and shot himself through the head. He is expected to die. The tragedy shocks Herkimer County and ends the trial with dramatic unrest.
A Brentwood resident in Little Rock reports Mrs. Mary Conklin attempted to cross White river on horseback with two boys behind. The saddle slipped, throwing her into the water. she escaped, but her eight and five year old sons drowned.
New York June 4 ex President Cleveland General Sherman and many others attended the Actors' Fund anniversary exercises at Palais theatre. Edwin Boc arrett and other noted figures were present. Cleveland, Sherman and others spoke at the event.
News item reports the pardon of the Duc d Orleans and his planned conduct to the frontier under cover of night. It also notes M Conatans minister of the interior ordered the release of Louise Mighel from prison after doctors deemed her anatic. Paris, June 4. President arlene.
Washington June 4 The attorney general's opinion on Oct 2 1888 act restricting settlement lands in the arid West cites the interior department view. No entries should be allowed on lands potentially covered by reservoirs ditches or canals until the law is amended.
A special to The Journal from Kokomo reports Judge Daniel Waugh of Tipton County was nominated on the first ballot in a district race. The tally showed Folklette 80 votes and Lindoes 50 in the initial ballot, with Waugh securing a small lead.
In Philadelphia January 4 the congressional convention of the Twenty third district nominated Col William A Stone after Mr Beyaie, seven term representative, refused to accept the nomination.
The Soo and the St Louis railways plan a close traffic arrangement likening their union to the Northern Pacific Wisconsin Central deal. Receiver W H Truesdale notes talks of a closer traffic link but details remain crude. Both lines have long been in sympathy and see mutual advantage in welding interests.
The Northern Pacific unveils twelve dining cars and twenty sleepers as it inaugurates a double service of trains between the Midwest and the coast on June 15. The fleet now includes 24 dining cars and 55 sleepers, with new drawing room sleepers for nine, and odorous kitchens relocated from dining compartments. The railroad will run eight transcontinental trains daily with 108 local branch trains, promising a coast trip from New York in five days.

The house committee on postoffices and post roads authorized a favorable report on a bill to employ twenty six supervisors of postoffices. The postmaster general would appoint them from postal service officers and employees to oversee operations in twenty six post offices.
Portland dispatch reports the election favored Pennoyer for governor with Republicans dominant in both houses. The final totals are unclear in fragments, but the Republicans hold a large majority across the legislature and other statewide offices.
