An old-time groundhog near town emerges after a long sleep despite continued wintry weather. He does not see his shadow, sparking belief that winter is broken and spring may arrive soon, though forecasters caution groundhog folklore.
Rev Tucker Graham lectured on Japan at Kent Street Presbyterian Church last evening. The audience, invited by Sunday School teachers, filled the house despite bad weather and short notice, and the talk was well received.
The Union Band marks its fifteenth anniversary this evening with a banquet. The band will perform and the occasion appears as a social gathering of its members. Winchester citizens express pride in the organization and wish it enduring life and growing musical excellence.
The Odd Fellows gathered last evening in the Cather building to view their newly arranged quarters and were highly pleased with the space and its suitability for their purposes.
George Sumption died at his home on West Clark Street about 6 o clock after a long illness including a paralysis stroke. He was a carpenter and respected citizen. He leaves a wife and three children.
The remains of Mrs Sarah Hackney who died at her home near White Hall on Sunday were buried at Welltown today. The amiable Society of Friends member was 79 years old and the sister of the late Rev. Mr Heterick.
The funeral for Thomas R. Harrison who died at his home in Stephens City was conducted today by Rev. Nelson P. Dame. The remains were brought to this city and interred in Mt. Hebron.
The Southern line arrives late at Strasburg Junction causing long waits for connections with the B and C at Strasburg. A B O train waited 70 minutes Saturday night and nearly two hours Sunday evening to avoid missing connections, prompting calls for Railroad Commissioner action.
Country merchant Mr. George W Parish arrived with a large egg shipment. While unloading at Adams Express the crate bottom gave way and about twenty dozen eggs were smashed. Parish vows to be more careful in future.
The South End Hose Company held its regular monthly session. Members accepted an invitation to attend the third Rouss Anniversary and planned participation in that evening’s exercises. The recently printed constitution and by-laws were distributed and praised.
Married. Mr Henry J Kuhns of Adams County Pa and Miss Laura Bentzell wed at a ceremony conducted by Rev J B Stonesifer.
A large and brilliant gathering at the Reed home on Braddock and Clifford streets celebrated Mr. and Mrs. Jenkins. A lavish supper accompanied warm expressions of friendship as many friends attended, including Mr. Jenkins and wife and numerous other relatives and townspeople.
A winter day brought alternating rain and snow. Sidewalks flooded in many places as slush and thaw reduced visibility and slowed travel in the city.
At a Ti Ashby Camp meeting, an order announcing officers of the Grand Camp of Virginia was read. Gap John J. Williams of this city was named 2d Lieut Commander and in line for promotion to Grand Grander. Several valuable historical publications were received from Congressman S. B. Turner.
The Union Fire Company event planned for tonight has been postponed to Tuesday next due to the weather. Miss Exma Kiyzing was named president of the ladies committee overseeing the bazaar and oyster supper.
City ministers will hold a conference at the residence of W. L. Seabrook on Market Street tonight to discuss stance to the men. Rev. Dr B. K. Cox will read an essay prepared for the occasion.
Regular T. U. meeting rescheduled to February 3 in the afternoon at 3 o'clock instead of the previous time. Members are urged to note the change and attend.
The examination at the LY Female College will continue on Thursday and close with a drill. A reference committee is in attendance but has not been used yet.
The han dy prize went to Roberta, daughter of Mr. R. Clevenger, at last night’s blowers entertainment. Mr. W. H. Baker hosted a private whist with friends to honor bs pas Wheat and Samuel Morton. An elegant supper followed. A gas main leak outside the Ni York Clothing House on Main caused waste and a strong odor. The Pa Bard John Kerr Public School exam period ends and pupils are set to resume work. Mr. Vance Yeakley returned to Hagerstown after making a quick record of draw off and barrelling in a brief Senia ty on I ac prem Dre.
