Minnie Herman a 16 year old in Detroit was released after a trial on charges of setting fire to her employer’s house. Detectives say she confessed, but she later claimed she endured a six hour third degree interrogation and was induced to falsely confess. police deny the third degree. She was held briefly before the case was brought to court.
Former President of Wooster University and head of the American Branch of the International Peace Society, Dr. Sylvester F. Scovel, died Tuesday evening after a months illness. He fell ill after Thanksgiving with arterial hardening, pneumonia, and oxygen support, after visiting his daughter Mrs John McSweeney days earlier.

She travels extensively during winter through the South and Dr. Crabbe secured her for the day.
The sheriff’s office busiest in the city on tax settlement day. Deputy R. S. Seabee issued receipts while the crowd filled the window from morning until 11 at night. Over $25,000 was collected that day.

Mr Vic Bloomfield of Daytonia Florida begins wholesaling oranges in the city. His grove is bearing well this season and a weigh bill for 50 boxes arrived Wednesday. He will retail the fruit to city merchants once delivered, selling fresh, direct from the grove.
Vic Bloomfield sold a North Park house to R J Sidwell for 275 on a Wednesday afternoon. The seller had recently purchased the property from R P Scobee.
Washington reports a $14,000,600 reduction in next year’s government running expenses, a figure delivered to President Taft after his cabinet ultimatum. The President praised the cut but urged further reductions, prompting postponement of a cabinet meeting to Friday to revise the estimates.
By Friday the message is expected to be ready for Cabinet consideration. After its release the President plans three to four days of meetings with Senators and Representatives about the legislative program. Appointments to the Supreme Court and Court of Commerce will wait until later and judiciary nominations arrive in the Senate in the second week of the session.

Mr R A Scobee closed two city property deals Thursday morning. A Winn Avenue house and lot sold to R P Secobee and a Georgia Street house and lot to John S Rainey for one dollar and other considerations.
Harry Boulinger of Eckhart Mines, Cumberland County, was buried under coal and rock for six hours after reef falls. Rescuers nearly reached him before another collapse stopped them. He survived, walked, and was freed after six workers cleared away the fall and a crib protected him.

In Memphis Tennessee on a Frisco line a 35 year old Blytheville Arkansas man named Jack Thomas attempted a robbery aboard the Memphis St Louis Frisco train. A city watchman A B Walton shot Thomas in the heart as he confronted him in the smoking compartment ending the heist.
