Ballard Goes On Trial In Thanksgiving Night Shooting
John Ballard a longtime deputy policeman was tried by Judge F P Pendleton on a charge of malicious shooting without wounding and held to await grand jury action next week. Bond set at 300 dollars. The case drew a crowded courtroom due to Ballard's popularity. Ballard shot at Tom Smith a colored man at the police office after a dispute over lies Ballard claimed Smith had told Chief McCord. The bullet passed Smith's head and lodged in a window. no one was wounded. Deputy Strode and Chief McCord testified along with Will Dolphin the tailor, with Ballard as the only defense witness. Ballard claimed he acted after Smith lied about him and threatened to jail him. The shooting occurred Thanksgiving night at the skating rink and police headquarters.

Fatally Stabbed on Public Road in Breckenridge County
Breckenridge Perkins, 47, was killed Tuesday evening three miles north of here after a quarrel with Reese Coates over rent turned violent. Coates stabbed Perkins twice in the face and once in the head, severing the skull. Perkins died about two hours later. Coates, a tenant on Perkins’ farm, was arrested and held without bond.
