1 285 head of cattle grossed 220 232 last night in the Northern Virginia Livestock Producers 6th annual yearling sale at the Farmers Livestock Exchange. Cattle averaged 23.72 per hundredweight and 171.39 per head with an average weight of 678 pounds.
The Down Crier notes changing seasons with apple orchards and harvest scents. Lt. Thomas Groves, son of Mrs. Groves, serves as executive officer aboard the USS Perkins which aided a Marine transport wreck south of Okinawa with no survivors found. Apple deliveries, time changes, and forecasts mark a quiet fall transition as temperatures shift from 48 to 92 degrees and daylight saving ends October 30 in this Virginia area.

Kennedy plans to rest at Eunice Shriver’s home before a Cleveland stop and Monday debate after Salt Lake City departure.
Virginians for Nixon and Lodge have opened a local headquarters at 181 N Loudoun St. Vincent Catarella serves as temporary chairman with E R Huntsberry Jr as treasurer and Mrs E R Huntsberry chairing the duty roster. Hours run noon to 6 pm Mon Thu, noon to 8 pm Fri, 10 am to 5 pm Sat. Information on registration and absentee ballots will be provided with transportation to polls and babysitting services offered.
In Danville a 20 year old man, Hunt W. Farmer, died after an explosion while he and James Newcomb cleaned paint from a basement bomb shelter in James J. Walker’s home. Farmer burned when an electric buffer ignited paint thinner fumes. Newcomb escaped with a minor arm cut after breaking through a door to help. Mrs. Walker was upstairs unharmed. The shelter is one of two in Danville.
Vice President Richard M. Nixon planned speeches in Louisiana and Mississippi to end the second week of his intensified presidential campaign. He cited reports of a strong Democratic civil rights platform expanding into the South and outlined a six point farm program while praising his campaign climate in the region.

James Watt son of Mr and Mrs John T Watt of Gore will receive the American Farmer Degree at the National Convention of the Future Farmers of America in Kansas City Missouri next month. He is the first James Wood FFA Chapter member nominated for the honor with J Robert Russell of White Hall and George Wright of Brucetown also cited in 1940. Accompanying him will be R E Aylor Stephens City division superintendent of Frederick County Schools.
A safe at Shade Equipment Co on Route 11 north was forced open last night with a cutting torch and the tumbler mechanism removed. Equipment from a W and M Transportation Co truck at Clearbrook was also stolen, including a Bendix air compressor and two Flow 400 series units used for air brakes. The right head from a 1956 F7 Ford truck and other shop items were taken.

Nasser arrives on Long Island to join the General Assembly gathering as Castro and Khrushchev share dinner and discuss peace amid heightened security and diplomatic spectacle.
In New York AP report Herter predicts Khrushchev will push revamping UN proposals to a showdown. He told a meeting with Britain’s Lord Home and France’s Maurice Couve de Murville that a Soviet defeat is likely if the plan proceeds.

Olson has served as AEC general counsel since 1958 and lives in Sumner Maryland with his family.
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP bad weather today forced postponement of a U S attempt to send a spacecraft to the moon. The Atlas Able rocket had reached within an hour and 15 minutes of liftoff before the call off. NASA said high winds and weather stopped the launch with a new attempt possible Sunday.
Police were told by an unidentified woman that a former Hungarian freedom fighter planned to assassinate Soviet Premier Nikita Khrushchev and Hungarian leader Janos Kadar. The warning traced from Philadelphia to New York State Department, with claims that about 200 Hungarians would arrive in New York in small groups Sunday.
