Chicago AP reports the 1960 presidential debate will reach a vast audience as Kennedy and Nixon square off in a CBS studio. Each candidate will have eight minutes to present, eight for the other, with three minute replies to questions, then three minute summations.
Vice President Richard Nixon prepared for tonight's presidential debate with Senator John F. Kennedy after briefings and speaking engagements. He told Chicago crowds at Midway Airport and three South Side receptions that his wife Pat would watch the debate at home with their daughters. Nixon planned later speeches in Memphis and West Memphis before resuming campaign in Illinois.
Obe Down Crier reports a dogwood branch with red berries and white blossoms found at the John Hayes farm in Paris. Patricia Berry submitted the find to the Star, noting its notable bloom. Nelson Page scored his second hole-in-one on No. 5 at the Golf Club after a caddy challenge. Carl Bayliss notes two flocks of geese over Rt. 50 west of Winchester, first at 7 p.m. Thursday and again at 6 a.m. yesterday, flying in V formation toward the southwest.
Senator Kennedy arrives in Chicago to prepare for the first of four nationally televised debates with Republican rival Vice President Richard M Nixon. He will speak at the United Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joners convention and be greeted by massive crowds in Cleveland and Chicago.
The U S Army reports the first death this year from encephalitis in Korea. Sergeant Fuldon D. Bro, 33, of Colorado Springs Colorado, died Friday at an Army hospital six days after illness began.
A gas explosion deep in the Momii coal mine in Tagawa City trapped 13 miners. Local reports from Fukuoka say rescue efforts are underway as authorities coordinate safety measures and search operations.
Nathanial Hudson, 47, is charged with murder in the slaying of Julius Lee Jones at the Fruit Growers Labor Camp on Fairmont Ave. Jones, from Leesburg, was shot in the head at 1 a.m. Sunday. Hudson, a Florida transient from Ocala, was arrested in Harrisonburg after fleeing. Bond set at 25000. no fixed date for preliminary hearing. Five other workers held as witnesses. Coroner said death was immediate. Hudson claimed the shooting was to scare another worker and that Jones was his best friend. His wife and children remained at the camp.
LEOPOLDVILLE Congo Colonel Mobutu after a mob attack on two Mobutu appointees demanded immediate withdrawal of UN Ghana troops. He met with UN officials Dayal and von Horn, with injuries reported among commissioners Nussbaumer and Kandolo following Lumumba supporters assault.
In New York 15 people were arrested after clashes between Castro foes and supporters near the Cuban leader's Harlem hotel. Eggs and fists flew as four cars of Castro opponents were surrounded by supporters, police and about 500 officers responded. Other protests and sightseeing by Communist leaders continued in the city.
The State Pup il Placement Board chairman said no applications from three Negro pupils seeking transfer to Handley High School have been received yet. The Winchester School Board referred the requests to the board and urged placement at Douglas School. The board also affirmed denial of a 12 year old Negro boy’s bid to attend Chandler Junior High, noting his home is closer to Graves Junior High.
Western leaders led by Canadian Prime Minister John Diefenbaker attack Khrushchev’s plan to overhaul the United Nations. Eisenhower met with Nehru and Nasser to build support against the Soviet bid to abolish the secretary general’s office. Dag Hammarskjöld appeared and warned the UN’s fate Hang in the balance as accusal of misrepresentation intensified.
Harry F. Byrd Jr, Virginia newspaper publisher and state senator, is elected a trustee of Tax Foundation Inc. Also named were Richard C. Gerstenberg of General Motors Frederick R. Kappel of AT and T and Dr. Theodore O. Yatema of Ford. The foundation promotes prudent government spending and tax relief.
Howard Hull 31 of Bruce town was sentenced to eight years in the penitentiary with four suspended for armed robbery of the Western Union office last March 23 in Winchester. Landman in the same case received eight years. others indicted include Wines, Flory, Lankford, Lafirth, and Smith for various breaking entering and forgery charges.
CAPE CANAVERAL Fla AP The United States failed to orbit a lunar satellite with the Atlas Able the most powerful U S rocket. The two stage failure in the second engine sent the payload to fiery destruction over the Indian Ocean. The Soviets led in lunar exploration with Lunik I and Lunik II sending pictures from behind the moon.
President Eisenhower denounces deficit spending as a threat to American world leadership and a sign of political cowardice during a stop in Philadelphia on his way to New York for talks with Nehru and Nasser. He calls for a healthy economy to sustain leadership and free enterprise.
