Washington action tightens food and rent controls amid a broad push to halt rising living costs. Byrnes warns the public to unite in fighting price hikes as Henderson orders rent rollbacks to March levels and a 60 day food price freeze begins.
The salvage committee discussed increasing scrap collection from industrial workers and coordinating with county and State Highway Department trucks to fetch scrap from schools this week. Ben Belchie at Novick Transfer Company was named contact for school principals and teachers to arrange pickup, with movement delayed if not notified.
This is fire prevention week with emphasis on removing hazards to control the fire menace. Six prisoners escaped from Norfolk city jail early today after seizing keys from City Chief A C Langley. One man later returned and surrendered. authorities believe Peter Apostolos engineered the breakout. Carl Jefferson, a sailor, surrendered after being forced to accompany the group. The four others were Edgar Colette, Janie Barrett, John R King, and William Hodge.
A special scrap matinee will be held at the Capital Theater Saturday morning at 10 o'clock. All features are secured for the event and admission is free to those bringing three pounds of scrap. School salvage teams aim to collect the most scrap to earn free admission.
