Winchester Captain Kurtz dies a community leader at 88
Captain George W. Kurtz a famed Winchester citizen and old Stonewall Brigade officer died at 12 15 a m at his South Loudoun Street home. Funeral will be held Tuesday at 3 p m from his residence with Rev F T McFaden officiating. Burial in Mount Hebron with active and honorary pallbearers drawn from his business firm and local veterans groups. Kurtz lived nearly all his life in Winchester except during the Civil War, and witnessed events from Washington’s era to John Brown’s hanging. He was 88.

Father Sees His Son Die in Glendale Mine Blast
A gas explosion at the Glendale Gas Coal Company First street mine killed Walter Fogle, son of mine foreman Jesse Fogle, and left two others dead with two more entombed. Eleven workers escaped as rescue teams searched for the missing. Deputy mine inspector A E Lafferty said after damp likely caused the fatalities.

Funeral Services For Mrs Cale At Sacred Heart Church
