In the first war time election since 1918, more than 30 million Americans vote to shape the new Congress and state offices. Democrats hold Senate and House majorities, Republicans seek gains but face long odds. Voter turnout expected light with about 65 percent of eligible voters participating.
Washington reports Secretary Knox cautions against optimism over Solomon Islands fighting. He cites Ghormley’s revised tally showing two more Japanese cruisers and one destroyer sunk off Savo Island October 11 12, with five destroyers and three cruisers confirmed by Ghormley. He praises submarines and notes renewed Allied gains in New Guinea Kokoda and Guadalcanal actions.
The Orthopedic Clinic sponsored by the District Nurse for children under 21 will be held at Winchester Memorial Hospital on Saturday November 7 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dr. Robert V. Funsten of the University of Virginia Hospital will supervise the clinic. No appointments will be made.
At Stephens City Sunday night a house fire at A Asbury Stout’s residence claimed the life of three year old Lester and seriously burned Mary Virginia nine. Mr Stout and the girl are hospitalized as friends organize a relief drive inviting furniture bedding and other necessities from the public calling Miss Nettie Carbaugh for pickup and transportation arrangements.
Election officials begin vote tabulation in Winchester with 128 ballots cast by 2:30 PM. Reuss leads with 49 votes, followed by Sarah Zane with 30, Friendship 27, and City Hall 22.
Frederick county turkey growers report a difficult season with chilly frosts and flood damage reducing flocks. C. M. Rosenberger, the largest producer, markets some birds to Washington while Chicago reports live bird prices near ceiling levels. Rosenberger counts about 4 000 birds, but other growers exited or faced disease and losses.
City Selective Service Board issued induction orders for ten registrants to report November 13 for final army physicals. Navy Secretary Knox and Elmer Davis stated the Navy released all known facts about the October 26 loss of a U S aircraft carrier in the South Pacific. The carrier’s name was withheld until next of kin were notified and most of the crew was believed saved.
Franklin D. Roosevelt votes in Hyde Park at the old Town Hall booth. He identifies as a farmer and is the 175th to cast a ballot. Mrs Roosevelt is absent this year. He jokes about a London ballot and a plane delivery after a near miss in Washington.
Allied forces push into Rommel’s line near Tel El Akakirthe hill of wicked men as British infantry drive 16 miles into the Axis defense zone. The clash centers on a major tank battle reported to involve about 500 German and Italian tanks, signaling a pivotal moment in the 12 day Allied drive in Egypt.

London bulletin reports two bombs exploded in Vichy early today and injured policemen guarding the offices of Marshal Petain's social propaganda committee and Jacques Doriot's French People's Party. The first blast struck the front office, the second followed about an hour later.
A Reuters dispatch from Switzerland says 50 Yugoslav hostages were shot by German forces as reprisal for the assassination of a German district leader in the German controlled area of Slovenia.
Major General Carl Spaatz commander of U S Army Air Forces in the European theater was received today by King George in London.
Swiss agency dispatch from Prague states 18 people were executed for high treason last week with 13 killed on October 27 and five on October 29.
London reports two of four enemy fighters attacking the southwest coast of England were destroyed by British fighters this afternoon.
A. M. Fowler reports a four pound spring chicken from the Opequon area east of Winchester with an unusually large half pound liver. Nearby, over 1,100 small mouth bass were released last week in the South Branch Shenandoah between Overall and the Front Royal bridge near the Norfolk and Western station. The waterway is reputed as one of the best small mouth bass streams in the United States.
Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt tours Britain's Ministry of Food learning about 1 721 government run British restaurants serving meals for 20 cents and 17 000 factory canteens. She notes U S workers lag in feeding and observes experimental kitchens making lend lease dishes.
Chinese Foreign Minister T. V. Soong said from Chungking that his return from Washington gave him restrained optimism and a belief that the worst has passed. He praised American mobilization, predicted future talks with England and Russia, and stressed China seeks restoration of Manchuria and Formosa with logistics as the main aid issue.
