The Republican sweep expands in the House with 32 new seats by mid-day, topping 185. Democrats hold 200 seats with 47 contests undecided, three to minor parties. Senate gains include Revercomb’s win in West Virginia, Dewey’s rising stature, and Dewey’s New York governorship victory over Bennett.
Ma Winchester notes obtaining returns is hard in Dry Run and Russell precincts due to limited telephone service. In Frederick county 105 judges and clerks voted yesterday and cast slightly under one third of total votes. Some precincts show very low turnout among officials.
Army Air Corps reservist Daniel Richard Olexy 21 of Lansford Pa died instantly when his Fairchild training plane crashed on the Richard Jolliffe farm about seven miles southwest of Winchester on the Middle Road shortly after 11 30 this morning He had about 60 solo flight hours and was completing secondary training with the George Brinckerhoff Flying Service at Municipal Field awaiting active duty call.
Governor M M Neely conceded defeat to Chapman Revercomb in West Virginia's U S Senate race with Revercomb leading by about 35 000 votes as results from two thirds of precincts showed. Hugh Ike Shott and James Kay Thomas won other key offices amid a Republican surge and several Democrats losing House seats.
At a dull session Council discussed the 1943 budget with W P Anderson forecasting one more committee meeting before a called session next week. Council authorized Henkle Henry to pursue a 1000 bed hospital site with Army ties and to circulate questionnaires to the Surgeon General.
The Star reports Frederick county results with village judge Mrs. Della Gray wiring the counts. Twelve votes were cast that day and the second precinct’s report was topped by Gray. Second Lieut Archie Smith Jr a U S Marine flier reported missing over Guadalcanal has turned up in San Diego alive and well in a telegram to his aunt Miss Margueretta Turner. His father in New Orleans was notified of his disappearance on October 15 from a Dive Bombing squadron during the Solomon Islands fight. He was a pre medical student at the University of Vic when he enlisted in 1941 and is a cousin of Marine sergeant Robert Turner a Shenandoah Valley Academy alumnus among the first to land on Guadalcanal.

In New York on November 4, 1942, Thomas E. Dewey defeated Democrat John J. Bennett Jr. by a large margin, securing about 2.06 million votes to 1.48 million with ALP candidate Dean Allange at 399,798. The landslide ends Democratic leadership in Albany and boosts Dewey toward a potential 1944 GOP presidential run. Dewey promised four years as governor, stressing national war effort.
Senator Carter Glass, reelected by Virginia voters, says he has been very sick for several weeks but is recovering and expects to resume his U.S. Senate duties in Washington soon. The 84 year old spoke from his Lynchburg farm home while election day activities occurred. He expressed gratitude for supporters in the reelection bid and the statewide contest.

Representative Jennings Randolph appears to be losing ground in his bid for a second term in Congress. With 451 of 471 precincts reported, the Democrat leads Republican Charles Baker by 35 votes, 31,864 to 31,829, in the Second West Virginia District.
CAIRO November 4 The British Eighth Army under Lieut Gen Montgomery pushed beyond Sidi Abd El Rahman 18 miles west of El Alamein driving Axis forces back toward El Daba. The front widened as Deir El Angar Munassibi and Himetmat fell to British pressure. A London source said the enemy appeared to be in full retreat as armor and infantry pressed along the coast toward the Qattara depression.
