Commander Richard E. Byrd continues his narrative from Kings Bay Spitzbergen recounting the second instalment of his polar dash. He describes the freezing conditions as observations were made and the Fokker plane prepared for the voyage toward the pole.
Commander Byrd reports on aircraft repairs at K ings Bay Spitzbergen. The crew uses a coal company shop, fixes skis and landing gear, and conducts a two hour and ten minute trial flight after night work to strengthen skis. The big three motor plane finally lifts and tests the snow runway.

Italian believed to be R Russo about 22 from Youngstown Ohio was shot five times in the head by an unidentified assailant. His body was found near the Chesapeake and Ohio canal in Cumberland. State officials had not identified a suspect by 2 pm.

Winchester schools dominate the seventh annual St James track and field cup. Shenandoah Valley Academy takes second, Handley third, with Handley missing Rit ter and Edmondson in key events. Swank leads Handley with a shot put win and strong showings, while Bageant ages the mile in 5 03.
A large Virginia delegation led by Major R. T. Barton and Governor Byrd begins a seven day goodwill tour of southside and southwest counties. The group, sponsored by the State Chamber of Commerce, will visit towns as Barton meets with business and professional leaders. Mrs. Wallace Hough and Miss Dorothy Smith are noted as returning from recent trips.
Explorers led by Amundsen and Ellsworth expect steamer return to the United States after their polar flight from Teller to Nome. The Norge is being dismantled for southward shipment as Colonel Umberto Nobile oversees the process. A chilly Nome welcome contrasted with prior anticipation as preparations included ground cables and a 100 man crew to secure the airship.
Dr. Charles Fox Graham of Wytheville is named a member of Governor Byrd’s military staff. A World War I senior naval lieutenant, he is son of John T. Graham a long-time Wythe County legislator and brother-in-law of Ralph G. Pollard of Frederick County.
A free clinic for crippled persons of all ages will be held Saturday May 22 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the District Nurse Association office. Examinations and treatment are free for those unable to pay. Dr. Allen Voshell of the University of Virginia will perform examinations and operations as needed.
President Coolidge spoke in Williamsburg Virginia denouncing bureaucracy and federal overreach while urging states to defend sovereignty. He wore Amherst cap and gown given his doctor of law degree and received warm applause.
The Wardman Park Stock Company known as the Wardman Park Players will open at the Colonial Theatre for a summer engagement three nights weekly. The group from Wardman Park Theatre brings 17 performers with own scenery and wardrobes and will present New York hits such as Enter Madame Dulcie Tweedles and The Light That Failed plus others. The Colonial will function as a workshop with in house production all summer. The run opens Monday night and is verified by WCAP radio and local manager Mrs Claire Dotterer.
Sheriff Pannett reports Paul Elliott and Reed Rhodes, escaped convicts from Convict Camp No 10 Amosville, were surrounded nine miles from Monterey in a dense woodland. They had stolen a car in West Virginia after fleeing Campbell, then wandered into Highland County and were unarmed, with capture expected within hours.
Mrs. Sidney J. Newlin of Winchester died after a stroke at her Valley Avenue home. She was 63, survived by husband George Newlin and six children, plus five sisters. Funeral set for Tuesday at 2:30 pm at Braddock Street Methodist with interment in Mount Hebron. pallbearers listed.
Thirty three persons presented themselves for chest examinations at the free tuberculosis clinic run by the District Nurse Association. Time limited, only 33 could be examined by Dr. Kk. W. Harver of the tuberculosis division. Those suspecting symptoms were advised on living and dieting and told they will be first called at the next clinic. Dr. Lewis M. Allen and Dr. B. E. ndes Hite assisted along with district nurses Miss Higgins and Dean.

Prince Nelson, famed wire walker who crossed Niagara Falls in 1896, will perform on a quarter inch wire suspended across North Loudoun Street between the Colonial Theatre and the Henry building. He appears Thursday Friday and Saturday evenings as a Citi zen's Band benefit. Nelson recently toured Florida resorts and has been honored with numerous medals by foreign governments on two world tours.
