Amid Birmingham unrest, a community pact to ease racial strife gains support from prominent local businesses and leaders. Some fear economic decline worsens while others warn against boycotts as authorities consider federal troop deployment after last weekend’s riots. The Rev Fréd L Shuttlesworth Jr faces jail, fine, and appeal over an protest permit dispute.
Mrs Frances Carpenter of Berryville was awarded 500 damages in Clarke County Circuit Court against Safeway Stores Inc for a can of liquid detergent falling on her foot at the Berryville Safeway on January 13, 1982. The verdict was contested by Safeway attorneys. Circuit court jury was represented by H G Potts for the plaintiff with Kuykendall and McKee for the defense.

Senate leaders plan a debt limit raising bill before the current ceiling of 305 billion expires. The House approved 213 to 204 amid GOP and conservative Democratic opposition, with action anticipated by month end and further increases likely if Congress moves Kennedy tax cut legislation.
A broken vial of tear gas at Leggett's Department Store downtown sent fumes through the building. Paul Strawderman, assistant manager, said an employee jarred a vial while closing the safe, causing an evacuation. No injuries were reported and the store planned to reopen once fumes cleared.
Buckley-Lages of Winchester appeared to submit the lowest base bid for Stephens City sewer work at 142 104 68 dollars. Perry Engineering Co. of Winchester bid 154 586 dollars. Five installation areas are not included in the base bid, according to engineer John McNair.

In Yokosuka Japan a Soviet trawler used for electronic snooping was spotted near a U.S. ship monitoring astronaut Gordon Cooper. A U.S. destroyer tracked the trawler in international waters near the Coastal Sentry which watches Cooper and could influence his re entry after the 22 orbit flight. The trawler mission remains undetermined.
Tass reports Oleg Penkovsky was executed after the Supreme Soviet rejected clemency. The 44 year old former deputy chief of a scientific research body was shot for high treason in a spy case with Briton Greville Wynne, who received eight years, both accused of feeding 5000 films of secret documents to the West.
AP provides a detailed orbit by orbit log of Gordon Cooper's Mercury mission from blastoff at 8 04 a m Standard Time to Orbit 5. Highlights include first pictures televised at 8 18 a m and Cooper describing the flight as quite a thrill as he reports seeing the earth haze and Perth lights. He notes a 1 g experiment sphere release and Mercury Control calling the flight a textbook one while Trudy Cooper expresses reassurance from Houston.
In Port au Prince Fran cois Duvalier declares himself re elected for six more years after a rigged ballot. He vows no outside interference and appeals for better ties with the United States as loyalists push to fund inaugural expenses while opponents plot resistance.
Harold Thomas, 57, an Elkton chemical engineer, was reported missing by his wife Tuesday night. State Police say he telephoned from his Maryland home yesterday morning indicating he was missing. A pond drag and wooded-area search were conducted near the couple's cottage two miles west of Stephens City after bloodhound tracks. A general alarm was planned for 11 a.m. today if he had not contacted authorities.

Recovery forces awaited in the Pacific as Cooper's Faith 7 capsule prepared for a parachute landing 80 miles southeast of Midway Island after an 22 orbit flight from Cape Canaveral. The Atlas booster launched the mission with Cooper in high spirits as he snapped photos of the zodiacal light and radioed from the capsule.
Oceanographer Dr. Paul M. Fye reported photographs of possible debris on the sea bottom where the nuclear submarine Thresher is believed lost with 129 men. He cautioned that objects are not yet confirmed as from the Thresher and no identifiable items are visible in the images. The Navy inquiry continues to seek causes of the disaster.
