Congress applauds the daring Winchester flyer for a nonstop round trip from Kings Bay and circling the pole multiple times in 1514 hours. It marks the first such feat of its kind and the second since Peary, highlighting historic aviation achievement.
Lucius Hodge Vernon L. Sibert and three other Winchester men were arrested in Martinsburg by Sheriff McKown. Hodge faced liquor transport charges Sibert faced illegal possession charges. The three others were charged with public drunkenness. A half gallon of liquor was found in the car. Hodge’s mother’s car reportedly owned by Hodge and Sibert claimed ownership. Bail set at 250 and 200 dollars for trial this evening ten dollars each for the drunks.
R Gray Williams urged the mayor and Common Council to organize a mass meeting to honor Commander Byrd for his historic flight over the north pole. He noted the warm reception at Handley High School and called for a formal hometown congratulations upon his return.
Commander Richard E. Byrd and Floyd Bennett claim to have flown to the North Pole returning to Kings Bay Spitzbergen after a 15 hour 51 minute flight. They circled the pole verified Admiral Peary observations and noted sun aided navigation with sun compass and bubble sextant.
Italian bootblack Domico Lazazzera of Winchester was injured when a car from Martinsburg blinded him near a culvert and struck a concrete post. The vehicle overturned, Lazazzera was pinned, suffering a fractured collarbone and additional injuries. He was taken to Martinsburg City Hospital for treatment.

Carlton C. Collins becomes general manager of the George Washington Hotel succeeding Frank Gregson who moves to Read House in Chattanooga Tennessee to manage that hotel and the southern zone of American Hotels Corporation. Gregson wrote a farewell expressing affection for Winchester and Shenandoah Valley friends.
Hugh Mortimer Nelson 37, a Millwood farmer and civic leader, remains unconscious with a broken third vertebra after a collision near Boyce while returning from Romney to Millwood. His wife Virginia Westwater Nelson sustains cuts and shock but shows improvement. John Yowell and Stanley Carper escaped unharmed.
“Safety First” guides the District Nurse Association as free chest tests are offered to all in Winchester and Frederick County. People with even slight symptoms urged to attend the Saturday event at the Chamber of Commerce Building to screen for tuberculosis.

London reports indicate military concentration to secure food supply and no peace prospects as a seven day general strike nears. Government says situation improves but labor hints at a second line of defense bringing up to 5 million strikers.
Local Kiwanis members from Cumberland Hagerstown Winchester and Frederick met in Frederick Maryland for Inter-Club Day at the Francis Scott Key Hotel. The program included music invocation greetings talks by club presidents and officers and a group American Creed recitation followed by sightseeing and golf at Catoctin Country Club.
Motorists visiting Winchester yesterday toured Stonewall Cemetery where the Unknown monument is ringed by blooming spirea. The bloom should last most of the week as the Civil War graveyard grows greener from recent tree removals and new landscaping by Amy Ritter of Baltimore. Mrs. Ritter is visiting Mrs. C. W. Ritter. Mr. and Mrs. B. O. Randolph of Boyes, Virginia, shopped in Winchester.
Winchester hosts a national Black Bear Trail Convention June 2 and 3 with Hugh MacRae of Wilcox North Carolina as principal speaker. Gov. Byrd and other state leaders are invited. events include Governors Day and officer elections. The Executive Committee meets at the George Washington Hotel to finalize plans.
Public sale announced for May 12 at 33 N Braddock St featuring fine antique furniture and china. Also listed are garden plants and fruit trees from J F Baylis at City, and a May 14 sale of household goods and antiques at The Flower Shop on 18 W Monmouth St.
