In April the local police court recorded 43 arrests with liquor and traffic violations dominating. Liquor offenses and drunken driving accounted for most convictions, nine for reckless driving and overtime parking, plus one resisting an officer. Total fines reached 1103 dollars. many offenders lack cash to pay now and will settle in May, as jail capacity strains the local institution.
Officials report the federal count for Winchester will be announced soon with estimates of an 85 to 90 percent rise since the last census. Enumerators list populations and farms by district including Back Creek Gainesboro Opequon Shawnee and Stonewall with totals from 643 to 1,886 people and 4 to 186 farms. Local residents are urged to contact district headquarters if not yet enumerated before Friday.
Apple growers will confer with the Farm Board on cooperation on May 14. A 15 member group from principal apple growing states meets in Washington, including former Governor Harry F. Byrd of Virginia, a major apple grower.

A large dry grass fire broke out about 3 o clock in the afternoon on Morningside Drive in the suburban development. Firefighters rushed to the scene but could not immediately determine a cause. The blaze threatened the new residence of Mr and Mrs Clay Manuel though the dwelling sustained no damage.

A Washington party of 130 including Senators Gould and Glenn and multiple House members visited Virginia attractions in a pleasure trip through Northern and Central Virginia. The group toured caverns and historic sites ending at Monticello and the University of Virginia before returning to Washington. Members represented Western and Mid Western states with Englebright of California speaking at a dinner.

William J. Fulton, 48, defeated for renomination as Lake County commissioner, shot himself in Gary Indiana. Campaign manager M H Marquardt was arrested on election law conspiracy charges for importing five Chicago women to vote at Gary polls and released on $2,000 bond. Fulton previously served as Gary mayor and ran an oil and gas distributing and real estate business.
A Winchester recital features Kaspar and Mrs Kaspar from the Kaspar School of Music Washington with pupil Grace Foote a nine year old wunderkind. Credit goes to the Century Club for sponsoring the concert to benefit Stratford and attracting a large audience to Mrs Russell home music room.
The Ladies Aid of the First Christian Church will meet at 302 West Water Street tonight at 8 o clock. All members are urged to be present.
The Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer Pictures Corporation sues L. Marshall Baier for 2425 after a contract for 12 films at Empire Theatre was not fulfilled following a sale to Shenandoah Valley Theatres. The funeral of Miss Anna Virginia Hollingsworth, last of her family, was held at her cousins’ home in Winchester after she died of a heart attack Sunday. Rev. Dr. F. T. McFaden led simple services with hymns, followed by interment in Mesiti Hebron Cemetery. Pallbearers included Frank W. Bailey and William C. Miller among others from Shenandoah and Loudoun counties.
The Capitol Theatre lobby has been attractively decorated by staff artist Gordon Aiken for the Winnie Lightner and Joe E. Brown film Hold Everything to be shown Monday and Tuesday next week. Blue and white crepe paper with balloons in red orange yellow green and purple enhance the display.

In Cincinnati on May 8, two airplane mechanics identified as Lan Smith, 27, of Shelby Indiana, and Dominico Angeira, 27, of Torrington Connecticut, were killed when a plane crashed near Lunken Airport. Officials said neither held a pilot’s license. An employment ad seeks an active representative in the area.
A large number of Winchester Rotary Club members traveled to Richmond for the annual district meeting. Headquarters are at the John Marshall Hotel with early departures and some by car to attend the opening program. Officials said upwards of 40 members attended, with social events planned for Rotarians and their families.
Clyde Rosenberger was captured near Mine Run by Sheriff Sheetz and deputies after stealing a car and firing at officers trying to arrest him. He fled to Woodstock before being cornered and facing charges for auto theft and assault.
