Citrus Industry Engulfed in Slump
Winter Haven Florida May 7 The citrus fruit industry faces a deep slump with grapefruit selling on the tree as low as two cents a box while production costs exceed 35 cents. Orange prices will be less than a third of wartime peaks as a 40 acre grove now sells for 800 per acre versus 2500 during the war. The state forecasts a 91 million box harvest year end though over 5 million boxes may remain unpicked due to prices. Canneries pay five to 10 cents per box on the tree for juice, versus 42 cents last year, while fresh grapefruit averages 35 to 40 cents per box and last year 94 cents. Future output could reach 125 to 150 million boxes in five years, prompting growers to marshal new marketing methods as overproduction looms.

Stewart Bell Sr a Winchester orchardist and civic leader died at Winchester Memorial Hospital at 84. Born September 18 1864 he served nearly 40 years on the city school board and helped erect Handley school. He led orchard interests southwest of Winchester and held bank and business roles including Shenandoah Valley National Bank George Washington Hotel and Winchester Cold Storage Co. He was a Mt Hebron Cemetery Co president and longtime elder of Loudoun Street Presbyterian Church. Funeral 3:30 PM tomorrow at the Loudoun Street Presbyterian Church with interment at Mt Hebron Cemetery.

Bryan Ohio May 7 A 14 year old junior high athlete signed a statement admitting he shot and killed John Gabriel and his wife Pearl to steal their car for a dance. Sheriff Norman A Barnes said the youth is held without charge in Williams county jail.
