Frederick County offices including the clerk treasurer and revenue commissioner operate on a mix of DST and EST while some staff move to Winchester for DST hours. The county agricultural agent uses fast time while the sheriff’s office remains on EST. Winchester schools shifted to DST starting May 2, with no reported confusion.
President Truman urged the House to act quickly on the Taft-Ellender-Wagner housing bill, linking housing shortages to broader family life issues. He spoke at the National Conference on Family Life, highlighting housing, health and job security as direct concerns.
In 1758 Virginia's General Assembly granted James Wood Sr the right to add 106 acres to Winchester within its boundaries as the town grew with inhabitants. Four prizes were to be awarded as the exhibit opened at 2 p m Sunday for 16 days with 23 US watercolor paintings from the Richmond Museum of Fine Arts alongside student works.
Winchester police seek a white man about six feet tall who tried to grab Mrs. James Mason’s purse on Cecil Street near Handley Avenue at 10:30 p.m. The attempt failed as Mason and her mother screamed. $90 reportedly in the bag. A witness saw a man enter a car on Clifton Street, unclear if same suspect.
Frederick county plans to keep the religious education program in public schools for the current term. Misses Jean Baker and Sarah Wilson, with B. F. Strother and J. Floyd Wire, report letters from Minor Crier head of the state council. The Virginia plan is non sectarian with no school supervision of teachers and reports to parents on a special card.
Winchester Moose Lodge 1283 contributes 2100 to Winchester Memorial Hospital's 850000 building fund. Sherman W. Dick, lodge governor, presents the gift to fund a bed in ward unit 221. The donation follows a council vote amid a 20 month-old lodge's civic pledge.
Arlington Democrat Arthur Souther challenged the Arlington county convention plan after the state central committee upheld its conditions. The appeals committee rejected his complaint as baseless and said no rights were denied by the call. Souther announced plans to pursue state and federal court action and appeal to the state central committee.
Washington May 6 The United States failed to secure a truce in Palestine as Washington proposed a U N plan to fly Jewish Arab and other negotiators to the Holy Land. Britain pledged to act if both sides agreed but must honor the May 15 deadline set by Parliament for the Palestine mandate.
Trustee announces a public sale of Grove property located at 232 E Fairfax Lane. The sale is set for Saturday May 8 at 12 noon in front of the Frederick county courthouse. Good business location noted. W E Edwards Trustee.
City leaders led by Mayor C. R. Anderson toured recreation sites on a damp Monday. The group visited Brown Bombers field Sehseny Road fields baseball park tennis courts wading pools gun club and children's play areas to observe current facilities and discuss future development plans with Recreation Commissioner members.
Mr and Mrs Harry W Ebert and family pledge 2400 to Winchester Memorial hospital building fund totaling 850000. The gift funds a bed in unit 217 a semi private room and honors the hospital where all their children were born and rapid community needs for more facilities.

The Senate finance committee will hold two days of public hearings on the House oleomargarine tax repeal bill starting May 17. The Senate voted 47 to 30 to send the measure to the finance committee, signaling a victory for backers as supporters and opponents will be heard.
Frederickburg May 6 Delegates Gib son and Gov Tuck face call for a special General Assembly session to fund a 100 million dollar school construction program. A 3 cent per package cigarette tax and a 10 percent liquor tax are proposed financing methods. Spottsylvania supervisors urge at least 1 million borrowing for immediate school projects. Fredericksburg faces a similar near term borrow.
Two Berryville sisters became mothers within an hour last Sunday. Mr and Mrs John Kerns near Berryville welcomed a son at 12 15 a m. Mr and Mrs Cecil Malone of Nain welcomed a son at 1 15 a m. Mrs Kerns the former Virginia Renner and Mrs Malone the former Agnes Renner are daughters of Mr and Mrs Earl Renner of Nain. It was the ninth child for the Kerns and the fifth for the Malones.
France and Russia attacked the American plan to place Jerusalem under a neutral commissioner with no police power. They urged a strong international authority with a volunteer police force of 1000. Tsarapkin of the Soviet Union rejected the trusteeship council proposal, calling for study of France’s ideas. New Zealand pressed for temporary trusteeship amid Arab and Jewish opposition. Polish delegate Katz-Suchy condemned the council’s recommendations as half measures.
HOLLYWOOD May 6 Esther Williams national swimming champion and film star calls the new scanty bathing suits unflattering, impractical, and unsuitable for swimming. She says suits come off in water and argues women should have swimwear tailored to their figures like dresses.

The Senate advanced a 3.233 billion money bill by 74 to 2 to start a 170 group combat air force, sending the measure to the House. Chairman Bridges warned of Soviet expansion as he urged strong air power, with only Senators Taylor and Cain voting no.

The White House moved to head off a threatened railroad strike with urgent talks. President of the Brotherhoods and railway leaders were summoned for a conference as railroads issued notices to workers about potential layoffs and halted perishable freight. No seizure orders were planned, officials said, as discussions were arranged for tomorrow at 10 a.m. with union chiefs.
Providence teachers return to classrooms after a victory in wage talks. The APL Teachers Alliance accepts a single salary schedule replacing three. Immediate raise ranges from $2400 to $4800 based on service, with automatic $150 yearly increases.
