Weather bulletin reports crevasses near Vidalia Mississippi and New Orleans causing shipments to pause. Officials say river levels fall slowly over the next few days. A cabinet committee head will return to the area Wednesday night to assess impact.
Washington May 2. A Red Cross appeal increases the goal to at least 10 million dollars for relief in the Mississippi flood area after Secretary Hoover deemed the prior 5 million insufficient. Hoover conferred with Red Cross officials and President Coolidge on the revised appeal.
From Vidalia to Natchez and New Orleans, rising flood waters push crews to strengthen levees. Crevasses open near Natchez threaten four parishes as Yazoo floods spread east. Red River and Arkansas River crests drive emergency measures while Hoover reports 250 people displaced.
Richmond reports that the State Highway Commission, after adding 2.5 million dollars to the road fund, will announce many road building contracts this summer and fall. Allocations for the fiscal year starting July 1, 1927 move the program forward and speed construction by using new authority from the General Assembly.
Mr and Mrs J Ashby and Mr and Mrs George E Petley of this city arrived in England after sailing from New York on the Lancastria. They are marketing agents for Direct Cooperative Fruit Company Ltd and will survey marketing conditions abroad focusing on the coming season. They will visit England Denmark Sweden Norway Germany Holland Belgium and France, returning in six weeks. They handled 228 324 barrels of Virginia apples and thousands of baskets this season, exporting most to Europe and South America, about one twelfth of the Virginia crop from five counties.

He will take the county examination to enter high school and if he succeeds may graduate at age 16, another record.

Mrs Bertha Posen of Washington is hospitalized with severe head injuries after a head-on collision Saturday on Valley Pike near Lacey Spring involving CHR Posen and C W Gaunt of Boyce. Gaunt’s car pulled around a truck and struck the Posen vehicle. both cars were badly damaged and the steering wheel spokes snapped.
Virginia gasoline tax receipts for March reached $532 326.59 from 11 782 701 gallons, the highest March total since the tax began. March gains over February included 2 278 384 gallons or 22 percent, with 160 million annual gallon projections and potential $7 million in tax receipts.
Mrs Howard Hoge state president of the Virginia W C T U spoke at an executive committee meeting in Onley Virginia outlining benefits of prohibition. She cited a drop in penitentiary population and closed jails and fewer insane asylum cases along with reduced alms house ratios and longer life expectancy. Walter Mapp praised the W C T U and urged training children for a clean life. Members toured Chincoteague Island with the local chapter.
One of Virginia’s largest Modern Woodmen of America gatherings opens in Front Royal on Wednesday with over 500 visitors and a parade led by the Front Royal Concert Band. Crozet and Luray teams perform degree work at Perry Hall after a sixty day drive that added 200 members. Front Royal camp lists 201 members with 40 applicants. all camps invited.
Philadelphia May 2 George E Rowland police magistrate pleaded guilty to malfeasance misfeasance in office and misappropriation of funds and was sentenced to six years in county prison. He faced 208 counts in the indictment tied to liquor law cases. His son George F Rowland age 24 was named in an indictment for conspiracy in the case.
