The Winchester attorney has taken oath of office to fill the vacancy left by the late Judge Whiting. The swearing in marks a new chapter for the local judiciary as the successor assumes duties and presides over ongoing cases.
Philip Williams of Winchester is appointed by Governor Byrd to the seventeenth judicial circuit bench. He will preside over the Corporation Court in Winchester and convene Front Royal circuit court Monday, taking oath and resigning as Winchester city solicitor. The circuit includes Winchester city and Warren Clarke Shenandoah Frederick counties. Williams hails from a long legal family. his father Col John J Williams and grandfather Philip Williams were notable Virginia lawyers.
Mrs Ruth Snyder, on trial for the murder of her husband Albert Snyder, will be cross examined Monday after testifying she placed blame on Henry Judd Gray. She repudiated the Gray confession as obtained under duress and said she tried to save her husband. The courtroom listened as she described the March 20 killing in Queens Village and showed emotion when her daughter’s birth surfaced.
The Winning of Barbara Worth, a Henry King production by Samuel Goldwyn, stars Ronald Colman and Wilma Banky and arrives at the Little Theatre next week. Claire Dotterer reports securing the film after weeks of negotiations, praising its scale. Matinees and evening prices are unusually low with children admitted for 10 to 15 cents and adults for 25 to 30 cents.
The will of William Spottswood White of this city was probated in the Corporation Court yesterday afternoon. He, a prominent Presbyterian layman, leaves $500 to the General Assembly and Presbyterian Nation, Inc., for endowment and ministerial aid. Another $500 goes to Highland Avenue Presbyterian Church Sunday school, and $200 to Helen Chamblin. Various smaller bequests follow including a watch, a clock, spectacles, and cash gifts. The residue is split among his sister Janie W. Gilkeson, and brothers Hugh A. White and the Rev. R. Ashlin White. Hugh A. White is executor with a $25,000 bond. Executed February 19 in testator’s handwriting.
In Detroit on April 80 a July 1 hearing will set a date for a new trial in Aaron Sapiro v Henry Ford and the Dearborn Independent. Federal Judge Fred M. Raymond heard both sides and a mistrial was declared ten days earlier after Ford counsel cited affidavits from the Ford investigation staff alleging irregular conduct by juror Mrs Cora Hoffman including a newspaper interview.

Daniel Willard and Newton D. Baker sought Interstate Commerce Commission authority to join the Wheeling and Lake Erie Railroad board. The Wheeling line was recently sold to Baltimore and Ohio, New York Central, and the Van Sweringen operators.
Frederick A. Berger a 70 year old Virginia hotel owner and Kathryn B. Thiele a 58 year old Virginia woman sought a marriage license in Queens Long Island City. They had married the night before at St John s Episcopal Church and will live with Berger at his Warren Virginia home. The former partners are deceased.
A Winchester resident recounts a touring Ohio woman who, after visiting New Orleans for Mardi Gras, calls the Apple Blossom Festival the world’s greatest. The traveler, wintering in the south, plans to advertise Winchester from the Great Lakes to the Gulf and Europe to boost the city’s profile.
Mr and Mrs Harry Markey of Philadelphia visited Mr and Mrs Thomas Kremer at their South Cameron street home during a recent festival.

Federal agents seized three planes on a highway near Los Angeles used to smuggle aliens from Mexico into California. One aviator was shot and killed in the ensuing fight. Two other aviators were captured. ten Chinese who were said to have been carried to Tijuana escaped. The dead pilot was identified as Arthur D. Dougherty of Los Angeles.
The battleship Colorado ran aground on Diamond Reef near the East River mouth and required seven tugs to pull her free. She was en route to the Brooklyn Navy Yard and appeared undamaged.
Beginning next Monday night at 8 o'clock Greenspring Methodist Church South starts a revival. Rev W C Lattrell of Baltimore Conference assists. the pastor John T Banks invites church and community cooperation and earnest prayers for a strong religious revival.

The probate of the will in Winchester names Camille and Margaret Graber and August and Norman Graber as heirs. The home on South Cameron Street goes to the two daughters with payments to the sons to equalize, and unimproved lots on North Braddock Street to be divided if needed. Margaret receives all bank stock, Winchester Cold Storage stock, household goods, and a trust to distribute to siblings. Executor Jas P Reardon posts bond of 6500 dollars.

Roanoke Virginia April 30 Walter Boothe is reported to be growing gradually weaker at the hospital where he has been kept alive for nine days by air pumped into his lungs. He has had a worse day, refused nourishment, and shows a strained expression though his mind remains alert. His lungs collapsed April 26 due to a fracture dislocation from a May 1926 automobile accident.
Charleston April 30 The West Virginia Legislature created the state poet laureate post paid 900 annually and ended its regular session. A three day session opens to finalize the biennial appropriation bill which had been disputed at the end of the regular session.
President Coolidge weighed an invitation from Mississippi river state governors to visit the flood area as Hoover tours the region. Dynamite prep continues to widen crevasses at the Carhon levee near New Orleans while floodwaters threaten Vicksburg and nearby communities. A triple shooting in Belmont adds to the day’s turmoil as Hoover appeals for funds by radio and Red Cross officials coordinate relief efforts.
