Fannie Mae's role in helping Jones buy a house
Congress created Fannie Mae in 1948 to buy FHA insured or VA guaranteed mortgages from banks. By February 1949 it had taken over over 278000 mortgages totaling over 2.2 billion dollars. The program frees banks to issue more loans while Congress may need to approve more funds. FHA loan guarantees have slowed as Congress withholds insurance pending funds.
