Traffic Deaths Rise Over Weekend In Virginia

Nine traffic deaths over the weekend raise Virginia’s total toll to 180. Among the victims were two young soldiers, Pfc Manuel Gonzales, 20, and Pvt Blair Grimes, 18, of the Third Armored Cavalry Regiment from Fort Meade Maryland. Their convoy overturned on the A P Hill military reservation in Caroline County after leaving a movie party, injuring five others.

First Baptist Church and Handley Board Buy Miller Property

The First Baptist Church and Handley Board of Trustees purchased two major Miller estate properties at a Saturday auction totaling 34,525 dollars. The Winchester church paid 16,500 dollars for a 111 room brick house at 125 N. Washington St, while the Handley board paid 13,500 dollars for a brick dwelling at 116 W. Piccadilly St. Other high bids included Lawrence Sullivan 300 dollars for an unimproved lot off 115 feet on an alley west of Fairmont Ave Irvan OConnell 3900 dollars for a small dwelling at 128 N. Washington St and Ralph Shafer Jr 325 dollars for 13 acres with a log cabin two miles northeast of the Boy Scout camp at Rock Enon. Dr E T Clark pastor announced the purchases at 11 a m service saying the Miller property would be renovated for educational and recreational use, including moving the kindergarten into the building next fall and using the yard as a playground.

Plains States Hit Hard by Dust Storms

Blinding dust storms swept across the plains with winds near 60 to 80 mph and gusts higher, causing eight highway fatalities and about 50 injuries in Kansas and Texas. Bullet-Pierced Slaying Steps at a Winchester Home

Walter Johnson held in Winchester Jail on $10 000 bond for the slaying of Andrew Burks at 114 W Leicester St Burks died from a bullet wound through the left chest that pierced his heart. Mrs Lane Dies at Home in Berryville and Richmond Interment
