Senators and officials pursue action to shield Ned McLean while probing the oil controversy. The Kansas senator appears in discussions tied to presidential turnings and principal roles in the inquiry.
Senate oil committee heard that Bennett relayed assurances from Daugherty to McLean promising no resignations and support, while Daugherty returned from Florida to attend cabinet meeting without resigning. The testimony described the January 29 principal telegram and Bennett's claim of Daugherty's help to keep McLean off the witness stand.
In Park IIIE Va March 7 the Grace Episcopal Church Woman's Auxiliary met in the parish house with President Mrs Goodwin Williams presiding. Reports noted a Homeless Boys box for Covington Va containing 30 quarts of preserves and four jars of pickles. A letter spoke of the box’s safe arrival and another Ada Knight missionary in Greene County appealed for groceries and clothing. The group planned a spring box to be sent early April and formed a committee to highlight recent mission field events. Also recounted was Luther Boyce’s accident in a belt incident on a W S Bromley farm with injuries but he rests well.

About 1,000 feet of new fire hose purchased by ordinance of the Common Council underwent a rigid test at a city hall fire plug this afternoon. Chief Fire Warden J W Sibert directed the test with firemen from all local companies assisting. The Sarah Zane and Friendship pumper links were tested at 300 pounds pressure.
Mr. J. Nathanson of Nathan son Co returns from spring buying trip with a large selection of dresses coats coats suits and millinery now on display. The firm emphasizes quick selling and low profits with courteous salesladies and urges Winchester ladies to inspect the line before buying elsewhere.
Master Carl Peer son of Mr and Mrs Edward Peer underwent surgery at Memorial Hospital Wednesday morning. His condition was reported today as much improved.
Jenniée Scrivener Lockhart wife of Joe Lockhart aged 67 died at her son's Lehew residence after a long heart illness. She is survived by her husband and six children, and a sister and brother. Funeral at Bethel Church with Rev. Courtney H. Anderson officiating. Interment at the adjoining cemetery. The Lockharts once ran Rock Enon Springs Hotel for 21 years and were known for hospitality.
Richmond March 7. State lawmakers reject all 10 harbor bond issues while approving the Layman prohibition bill conference report. A separate measure shifts liquor poisoning deaths to first degree murder and makes related sales a felony if death does not occur. A game and inland fisheries probe will start March 27 in Richmond as legislators accuse the department of waste and improper use of boats.
The People's Picture Service will be held at the Empire Theatre 3.30 Sunday under Rev F R Casselman of the Reformed Church and Rev Robert B Nelson of Christ Church. Hymns will be sung and an address given. the six reel film Makers of Men will be shown. A silver offering will cover expenses. ushers will be appointed. Public invitation extended.

The Friendship Fire Company held its monthly meeting at the hall with many members present. Rev. J. F. Morgan led “Oh Friendship” and the group discussed new uniforms to be ordered March 16. The bazar produced a strong result, with Memorial Hospital to receive 25 percent of profits, and the Ladies Auxiliary to be made permanent.
Charles H. Callahan of Alexandria, Virginia grand master of Masons, invited by D. G. Cooley to officiate at the Berryville High School cornerstone laying on Main Street. The ceremony, May 1, is hosted by Treadwell Lodge with assistance from neighboring lodges and cooperation from the Eastern Star.

Reps Langley of Kentucky and Zihlman of Maryland, both Republicans, denied improper official influence and any money exchanges amid Chicago grand jury charges. They said they lack official information and would prove their innocence if charged, noting Langley chairs a key House committee and Zihlman chairs labor, with their home bases in Pikeville and Cumberland respectively.

Col Leigh A Fuller retired of Winchester is awarded two citations for gallantry in the Spanish American War. The actions cited were aiding wounded under fire at Las Guasimas Cuba June 24 1898 and at Santiago July 1 1898. He was then first lieutenant and assistant surgeon. Captain Henry Steere retired of the U S Army practicing medicine in Winchester is his son in law.
At the Seventh District Republican convention in Winchester, Elizabeth Kern was unanimously selected as a state delegate to the national convention in Cleveland, Ohio, in June. She becomes the first Virginia woman to hold such a post for the party, with Mrs. Baterry also elected as an alternate. The gathering praised President Coolidge’s leadership and noted a strong showing of women among delegates and committeemembers.
