The woman warden orders all entrances locked and guards posted around the building after fugitives are seen going north toward Chicago. A mysterious airplane was reported hovering over the prison while awaiting trial. A nearby garage burglary is noted with a stolen auto.
John Dillinger and Herbert Youngblood escaped from Crown Point jail and released Deputy Sheriff George Lunt and garage worker Edward Sager. A large posse formed, totaling about 500, pursued the fugitives north toward Kankakee after leaving Momence, with highway police led by Edward Rust in charge.
Notorious killer John Dillinger and a black prisoner escaped from Crown Point jail after seizing two machine guns and a hostage. They fled in a small sedan toward Gary and Chicago as Deputy Sheriff George Blunt was forced to cooperate. guard barriers tightened at the jail following the escape.
Miss Annie Shepherd Shryock died March 2 at 10 30 PM after a brief illness at the home of sister in law Mrs Ada Trussell. A Stephens City native and longtime millinery owner she leaves brothers W H Shryock George Harry and Russell. Funeral at Trinity Lutheran Church with Rev Snyder Alleman and Rev Bush. Burial in Green Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers are six nephews Rhoderick Alfred Walker Henry Shryock James Russell Shryock and Aim Lemley.
The Junior Christian Endeavor Society of the United Brethren Church will lead the Christian Endeavor meeting tomorrow at 6 45 pm. Organized earlier this year with ten to twelve members, it now has 20. Supervisors are Miss Gladys Patton and Miss Marie Fries with officers Junior Barley president June Purtlebaugh vice president Nancy Gano secretary Charles Patton treasurer Thelma Edwards pianist. Visitors welcome. Rev Preston Sartelle to preach at 11 am and 7 30 pm in the pastor’s absence who has been ill.
The Star states that Cecil L. Whitlock was not their son. The paper notes Cecil C. Whitlock, formerly of the county, was fined in police court several days ago.
The Star issues a correction announcing the death of Mrs. Ralph Brown. It adds two more children Betty Brown and Geraldine Brown and a brother Ralph Johnson of Charles Town W Va, and notes Mrs. Brown was a niece of Mrs. S E Robertson of this city.
Miss Eliza Costello aged 75 years died February 23 at her brother J R Costello's home. She was a longtime Cedar Cliff Baptist worker and daughter of James and Sarah Ross Costello, one of 13 children. Funeral at Cedar Cliff Presbyterian with burial in Green Hill Cemetery. pallbearers were Costello relatives.
The Friendship Fire Company approved a resolution praising Rev. W. L. Dudley of the Church of Christ for a timely sermon delivered before the company at the Church on West Cork street. The meeting also noted an annual memorial service and sermon, and admitted about a dozen new members pending constitutional signups.
The Young People’s Service League of Christ Episcopal Church will hold a candle light service tomorrow at 5 30 p m in the church. Mrs Hunter Gaunt will be the soloist. Everyone is invited to attend.
City Fire Chief Barr urges residents to report fires with discretion. In small fires a single company can handle, callers should indicate whether the blaze is large or small to avoid sending full apparatus. Firemen object to unnecessary alarm calls and seek public cooperation.
Secretary Bell announces 1934 automobile license plates available at the Chamber of Commerce office starting March 15. Motorists should obtain registration cards between March 1 and March 15 and complete transfers to ensure timely license mailing. The chamber will issue auto truck motorcycle and new categories including passenger hire and trailer licenses locally. If relocating to Virginia call at once to secure title and registration.
Members of Trinity Lutheran Church in Stephens City arrange a pageant to be presented Sunday, April 8. A church supper follows on Saturday, April 14.
Mrs Laura Kitchen Rutherford 52 wife of Charles A Rutherford of Catlett Va died at 8 this morning in Warrenton Hospital from complications after an operation last Monday. She was in precarious condition when moved from home. operation hoped to save her life but she did not benefit. Survived by husband two sons Julian Rutherford and John Terrell Rutherford of Berryville two daughters Mrs Lewis Lashure of Indiana and Mrs Walter Lashure of Catlett a brother Wise Kitchen Stephens City two sisters Mrs Lucy Grubbs Winchester and Mrs George Armel Front Royal. Funeral Monday 11 am at brother-in-law Jack Rutherford’s Berryville pike with burial Mount Hebron Cemetery Berryville. Reverend L A Parger to officiate. Pallbearers Jack James Walter Henry Rutherford Holmes Hardesty and David Grubbs.
Members of the Winchester Ministerial Association will gather at Handley Library on Monday March 5 at 10 30 am for their regular monthly meeting. Devotions will be led by Mr Walker McC Bond and Rev E T Clark will present the paper titled Todays Challenge To the Church.
A new relief organization the farm debt adjustment committee was formed in the county courthouse yesterday. Governor Peery had named the committee which aims to unite debtors and creditors informally to reach fair solutions, with Robert S. Smith as chairman and Charles H. Harper as vice chairman.
Washington man wins $10 prize in county spelling bee with six prizes all won by Stephens City pupils. W W Glass is runner up.
Fatal words ended the run for top competitors at a school spelling contest. Though harder terms like phlebitis and eleemosynary were handled, easier words felled finalists, with runner up struck by noesis in the final round.
Miss Dora Waldeck of Stephen son won the mayor's prize of 5 dollars in the annual spelling bee at Handley High School Auditorium. Henry E. Brockway of the Bureau of Foreign Agriculture Service won the 10 dollar prize in the open contest. Elmer C. Helm was runner up for the 10 dollar prize and D W Glass runner up for the mayor's prize. Frederick County pupils claimed several 2.50 prizes across grades. Distant names and scores reflect Winchester county contests.
The recently organized Men s Athletic Club convenes at 7 30 oclock Monday evening in Handley Library. Members and prospective members are invited. The constitution and by laws committee will report for discussion and a room for meetings will be discussed.

A kitchen water-back pipe explosion shook the house at 412 North Loudoun street while Miss Bettie Grant lay ill in bed. Sparks and smoke filled the room as lime clogged pipes, and Miss Tracy, cooking nearby, fled moments before the blast. Grant family ties across Winchester are noted as inquiries rise into her condition.
In Greenwood Mississippi Dr Sarah Ruth Dean was convicted of poisoning the whiskey murder of Dr John Preston Kennedy and sentenced to life. In Crown Point Indiana killer and bank robber John Dillinger reportedly escaped from an “escape proof” jail with an armed companion. Coast Guard aided Tangier and Smith Islands residents cut off by winter blizzards.
In police court Harley Carper was convicted of stealing a bicycle and given three months in jail. The bicycle was recovered after being sold for $3 to a boy employed with a local firm. George Orndorff Gordon Orndorff and Samuel Bock were found guilty of stealing coal and each got three months in jail. H Hughes was fined $10.75 for drunkenness.
