U.S. Command said two brigades of the 9th Infantry Division and a regimental landing team of the 3rd U.S. Infantry Division will be withdrawn from South Vietnam by the end of August and replaced by Vietnamese soldiers. A special task force reports the first combat unit to be replaced will be a battalion of about 900 men airlifted to the continental United States before mid July.
Seven thousand allied troops sweep the Central Vietnam coast as U S forces close on a fortress ten miles south of Da Nang. The operation comes three weeks after the initial assault with reports continuing on page two.
The Pentagon estimates 16 000 U S troops will be withdrawn in the first phase while a 25 000 man replacement program is planned by a task force meeting in Hawaii. The 9th Infantry Division'.s two brigades, totaling about 10 000 men with detachments, are implicated with redeployment unclear.
A former U.S. Capitol flag will be dedicated along with a 25 foot flagpole at Flag Day ceremonies at Elks Lodge 867. The 3 p.m. program tomorrow is open to the public.
Nearly 3,000 Winchester school students carried flowers from their schools to Mt. Hebron Cemetery to honor Judge John Handley John Kerr and other school benefactors and teachers buried there. Northwest Airlines and its 1600 pilots reached a settlement after a six hour strike that began at midnight. National mediation Board chairman Leverett Edwards announced the deal, with pilots returning to work and flights resuming. Edwards said the agreement reduced monthly flying time from 85 to 80 hours starting July 1, 1970, below the pilots' initial 75 hour demand.
Dr. H A Rollins Jr of Virginia Tech told area fruit growers at D K Russell & Sons orchards that apple and peach crops in Winchester look very good and high quality. He noted Red Delicious may not set well in some blocks, but overall the outlook is favorable. Dr. Clarence Hill warned that 1970 will bring a cicada brood to Winchester Frederick County, with the 17 year period ending next year. Details on control to come. Nationwide, Rollins expects a good eastern crop despite recent hail in North Carolina and cites New Jersey at about three million bushels and Washington around 30 million.
